: Steering Arms
WheelingPiazza 03-30-2002, 06:33 PM Ok,
SO I know this cant be a Fluke,
On my cruiser I am running into issues with rims, Currently The inside of the rims are hitting the tie rod ends.
My thinking is this, I know people make hi steer arms, Does anyone make arms to move the tierod end away from the rim?
Eventually I want togo PS, But I am trying to stay away from spacers because the studs are to short.
Cruzilla 03-30-2002, 09:14 PM You must have the older drum brake's up front. go to your local tire shop and buy some 1/4" wheel spacers and install them!
Real simple fix, for about 5.00 ea
WheelingPiazza 03-30-2002, 09:20 PM Well its a 63 so ya there older.
Maybe disc brakes is the way togo..
AS for the spacers, I already have them I just need longer studs and at 5 bucks each thats kinda expensive.
cardinal fang 03-30-2002, 10:10 PM $5 for studs??? Try autozone, they carry them under the counter. Are you running the stock rims, or do you have alloy rims? Alloy wheels are thicker than steel rims and seem to cause a lot of problems with rubbing. Yes, histeer arms to pull the arm inward, but for that price you can put min-truck disk brakes on and solve the problem. You need disk brakes, it makes a big difference.
WheelingPiazza 03-30-2002, 10:39 PM Yea Alloy rims. Wifes choice its her rig..
The studs need to be longer if I run spacers so I may just go to autozone and get longer ones..
If I go Discs I may try and find TLC discs instead of mini truck..
Dan Gleason 03-30-2002, 10:50 PM Steve, the studs you need are Dorman part # 610-265. 12M-1.5x44.8MM. They are about 3/8" longer than stock. I used them with 1/4" spacers and Eagle 589 wheels and they were plenty long. $1.99 each at Schucks.

ranger 03-30-2002, 10:51 PM Get different back spaced rims...:skull:
WheelingPiazza 03-30-2002, 10:53 PM Ranger, then your talking custom rims. Not going to happen.
WheelingPiazza 03-30-2002, 10:55 PM Thanks Dan I will hunt them out tomorrow
Steve,
If you are ever going to end up wheeling this thing hard, I would skip the TLC disk brakes and go with the mini truck disk brakes instead. The mini parts are so much easier to get ahold of.
Besides, the pre 79 Cruiser steering knuckles have a small bolt pattern for the steering arms to bolt onto and I don't know of any company that makes high steering arms for this small bolt pattern. There could be some out there that will custom make them for you, but most of them are for the larger bolt pattern like the mini trucks and post 78 TLCs.
BJ On Roids 04-01-2002, 06:49 PM this will affect your ackerman angle, but until my high steer arms get here its what i have to make do with, and it drives NICE, i thought itd have more bump steer, but its all good
take both steering arms off, now put the drivers' side one on the passneger side and vice versa, now it fits by a long way
need to probly shorten and tap your tie rod, but dont shorten it too much and it'll fit on when you got to high steer

coiledbj42 04-02-2002, 10:59 PM I got my arms turned in, it drives ok on the road.
