I've been working on the wife's pickup and it has never seemed to run right. Replaced the cap, roter, plugs, wires, adjusted the timing rebuilt the carb and still runs bad. I inserted a screw driver in the end of one of the plug wires and noticed the spark was erratic I then checked the air gap it was good. I went and got a different coil and the pickup now runs better than it ever has. What I need to know is there a way to test a coil to tell if it is operating properly?

You check the resistance w\ a Ohm meter
Dont remember the specs, but you can get it in a manual

if you replace it and the problem goes away then its crap. resistance is one way but not always accurate, I have had a few that went bad only wen they were hot, either due to expansion or a wire heating up or something.
