: AW4 versus 42RE
Well most of you know my 42RE leaks and is a POS.
So what are the advantages to using an AW4 instead of the 42RE?
I am not familiar with them and really am not sure why people swap them out.
Thanks.
bp95yj 01-30-2006, 12:43 PM i will start off by telling you that the AW4 trans is a very reliable transmission. That I have seen people run in built rigs and last for a long time.
The 42re is a much less reliable trans
Go_Vols 01-30-2006, 12:48 PM I've seen the AW4 and TF999 take some pretty hard beatings and have yet to see one let go...
What makes the AW4 better?
Does it act the same on the street as this is a DD and weekend wheeler.
JohnnyJ 01-30-2006, 03:13 PM After I drove a ZJ with 4.0/42RE and XJ with 4.0/AW4 backto back, and I liked the feel of the AW4 much better. It seemed to be crisper in the shifts and let the engine pull harder. I'm sure some of it had to do with weight difference, but the XJ drove a lot better from the drivetrain viewpoint.

I'm planning on swaping a AW4 for my TF999 to get the over drive but that's off the point.
What engine are you running? Not sure the AW4 will mate up with the V8
Sorry I have the 4.0 I6.
Does the AW4 NOT have an overdrive?
Jay5.9L 01-31-2006, 08:25 AM I think both the AW4 and the 42RE are both 4 speeds with the 4th gear an over drive. I think it will bolt up but you probably hit some computer problems since they are both computer controlled (I think).
NothernAZxj 01-31-2006, 08:27 AM yes the aw4 is a 4 speed auto........and very reliable.....and has interchangable bellhousing that can be adapted to toyota, gm, jeep needs
So the AW4 and the 42RE are basically the same as far as function wise correct?

yes they are........both 4 speed autos, but the aw4 is a little heavier duty
Thanks alot.
Maybe I will look around and see if I can find one of those CHEAP
NothernAZxj 01-31-2006, 10:01 AM usually very cheap around 200 or less, it is computer controlled
Thanks I will explore this a little more as an option.

93 grands had aw4's
keepviper13 01-31-2006, 11:35 AM One thing i've found from doing some research and from having one myself is that the AW4 tends to warm up pretty hot. I don't think its too hot to harm anything but a tranny cooler should be thought about if your in a warm environment. I can't complain one bit about it other than that. It holds up great and feels great on or off-road. Has about as good of gearing as you can get with an auto, 2.8 first gear and an overdrive.
My Grand came with the tow-prep pacage so it has an aux. cooler so that should not be a problem.
Go_Vols 01-31-2006, 06:30 PM we do have a temp issue every now and then with our AW4 -- so an extra cooler is a great idea
So another buddy of mine just suggested a 700R4 using an adapter from novak.

Any thoughts??

the adapter costs more than a plu n play aw4..........LOL
Yea that is what I was thinking also.
JeepJukka 02-01-2006, 03:11 AM just swapped aw4 to -94 Zj. runs much nicer now :smokin:
one planetary and overdrive gave up from 42re, reason for breakage was clogged trans cooler.......
its quite easy to swap aw4 to 93-95 Zj

Can you tell me more about the computer controlls. I have a 95 YJ would the AW4 not work?

paradisePWoffrd 02-02-2006, 10:42 AM i have a 94 ZJ with a 5.2 and i was wondering if an AW4 would bolt up?
is the 42RH and 42RE the same tranny basically?
isnt the 42RH the same a A518, so you could get shift kits and all what not for them, as maybe not for the AW4?

no I dont think it will the bolt pattern is different on the V8 than the 4.0 inline 6.........it might have the same pattern as the 2.8 and 4 cyl if so it mmight be possiblee........trust me an aw4 does not need a shift kit.....quick clean crisp shifts.........
Chrisjeep7 02-03-2006, 07:24 AM aw4 is a great tranny. its hell for stout (within reason, its not a TH400) and i have yet to see one just give up the gost that didnt have 200K+ on it. see many with 200K road miles on them and then be put into trail duty and be just fine. its a very popular tranny with many car makers.
I think what I am going to do it try one last time to seal it up and repair the leak, right now I don't really want to get into a tranny swap, maybe when I build my stroker motor I will do a tranny swap at the same time, and beef up the 231 TC also with a 4:1 (maybe).
