: Trussing A 9"

I HAVE A 79 BRONCO WITH 9" REAR AND 44 FRONT. I AM CONSIDERING TRUSSING BOTH HOUSINGS USING MID GUAGE PLATING. I KNOW THE DESERT RUNNER GUYS DO THIS TO THEIR REARS FOR REDUCED HOUSING TWIST AND BENDING. MY QUESTION IS WILL THE HEAT FROM WELDING MAKE THE HOUSINGS BRITTEL? DO I NEED TO TAKE ANY SPECIAL STEPS WHEN WELDING? I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY AND ALL COMMENTS

First take off the caps lock. Then use the SEARCH, to answer your Q. First tackweld everything in place. Then finish welding everything with short welds like an inch, while letting cool between welds. To much heat will warp the axel.

I just finished trussing a 9". I took 2X4 rectangular tubing and cut a pattern to fit it along the top of the housing from spring to spring. I did each side and then cut a small piece for the top to bring them together. Similar to the photo's in Currie's adds only on top instead of the back. I tacked it all together then welded it in short sections over a perod of two days while I was working on other stuff. Turned out good.

Sorry no pics. No digital and not smart enough to figure out the scanner, file, resize deal. Anyway just picture Currie's truss up on top and stop inside the springs on each side. Also makes a great place to attatch anti wrap bars etc.

I've trussed a couple of Toy housings. There are pictures of a few different ones in this thread:

Like the guy above said, tack it all together and do small welds letting it cool completely in between or it will warp.
It took me a couple of days to do each housing, so I just did other stuff while it cooled between welds and then walked back over to it every 15-20 min or so.

BTW, I used 2x6 tubing so that I could get both sides of the truss out of one shorter length of tube (approx. 4" at the thick end, 2" on the other).

have you seen the Art Carr truss, all you do is weld it on, it costs like 50 bucks, much easier then makinf it your self
