View Full Version : Hauling rig with a Uhaul car hauler?

Has anyone put a larger rig, like 4600#s, on a Uhaul car hauler? The original plans to get my old car hauler down here from Oregon fell thru and I will need to take the tonka up there within the next month or two. I know its going to be too wide, and I will probably just go and get a set of cheap 8 lug rims and tires at the junk yard to get it up on the trailer if I need to.

Anyway, anyone got any experience doing this? :D

I towed my XJ which definitely weighs over 4k (which is the U-Haul limit). 32 inch tires were too big for the straps, I had to let all the air out of them to cinch it down. Towed fine though, they has hydraulic brakes that don't require a tow controller.

Sounds good. I think that if I can get it on the trailer  I will be fine, though I am sure the straps won't fit over my 35s. I'm not really too worried about the trailer brakes. Surge brakes IMHO suck @ss. But since I have upgraded the brakes on the superduty it stops just find, I found out after the trailer brakes on my old trailer went out towing a car over a really steep windy pass in NorCal. Its nice to have a big fatass tow rig sometimes. :flipoff2:

Uhaul car haulers are pretty short, so there's no room to adjust the weight front to back. I'd find a rental place with a real car trailer.

I've looked and the only thing that comes close is an equipment trailer and I need this to be a one-way rental.

Probabally cheaper to just buy one and sell it when you get to where you are going ;)

The guy who bought my dads 58 IH 4x4 pick-up showed up with a U-haul car trailer. It worked fine, but it just fit on both length and width. It was the equivelant of a standard cab longbed. The hold-down straps barely fit the 235/85r16s. If you brought some other method of tie-down with you, you'd probably feel more secure.

The only problem witht the U-Haul trailer is you have to tell them what your hauling. I rented one to haul a Toyota FJ62 to GA. The Fj is not real big but it was too big as far as U-Haul is concerned. So I had to tell them it was a 4Runner. It towed fine but they do have limits on what can be hauled. I pulled it with my buddies Superduty and it did fine.

Yeah I am going to tell them I am towing a compact Jeep Pickup. Technically that is true since originally my truck was a 1/2 ton truck and by todays standards it is a compact. :D

Yep, they can be real jerks. Get your story straight before you go in - MG or Mini Cooper or something... :shaking:

U-hauls straps suck for trucks. My 73 Camaro was fine, a friends stock Tacoma 4WD needed some extra straps.

For everyones sake, I hope those little safety chains aren't all you used to secure that thing.

The "S" hook is what is alarming. Hopefully it is just holding excess chain from flying around.

Those chains are on the U-haul trailers as a safety device in the event the straps come loose. I think the S hooks are satisfactory for the intended purpose. They are not meant to hold the vehicle on.

i put my scout on one. full widthes and 38's. I had to take a fender off so i could drive over the tires and park it on one of the side rails.

I used one to haul a 4Runner from TN to Ga. It made the trip more enjoyable not having to haul an empty trailer there to pick it up. 31" tires are about max on the straps. Towed the 4Runner ok.
The uhaul website has a place where you can type in your tow vehicle and towed vehicle. It will tell you if they consider it an acceptable combo or not.
That way you'll know when you're asked the same questions when you pick up the trailer.

BTW, the straps don't go on the tires, they go over the steering knuckles :D :D :D

Most of the rental companies won't rent your JUST the trailer.... you have to get their truck with it. I thought Pensky was like that, but maybe not?

I had to do this when my truck broke down onmy way back from working in New orleans.

96 k1500 with 33"s, i had some 5k ratchet straps and 5 chains. It hung over the endges on both sides a little bit. I ended up getting ti all situated, airing down the tires aallll the way, chaining everything down. Then airing back up again. Towed it 1800 miles back home behind a budget truck.

Take some spare tires with you. The one and only time I rented a trailer I had 3 blowouts on a 2 axle trailer. Every tire on it had been replaced with a cheapass car tire.

they usually dont just rent the trailer. and that particular trailer is owned my my friend, he bought it used. but it was owned by penske at one time.

i use to live next to a penske rental yard and the owner use to rent me the same trailer sometimes. he wasn't suposto do it per penkse policy but he hooked me up.

Check with Budget...I've used their steel deck trailers several times... the whole deck tilts like a rollback (handcrank at the front of the trailer). I towed my jeep from VA to TX and then from TX to LA with no problems. Not sure if you have to rent the truck too....I did both times.
