: Unique exhaust idea... "backwards"

I was sitting at an airport the other day and was parked near a refueling truck. The thing that struck me as odd about it is the exhaust sitting outfront of the vehicle.

So, being the stupid imaginative bastard I am, I got to thinking about doing something like that on a 4x4.

Does anyone see any "issues" with this aside from the obvious making it fit?

On my Cruiser, I've got empty front frame rails. I intend to do a behind the axle steering conversion. So, I've got the room to do this. Imagine a muffler below the frame rails but "in between" them with a skid plate. I don't see anything physically impossible with doing it on my rig.

The only two thing's I see wrong is that when you are on the trail you are usually going slow, you would be driving into the fumes from your exhaust not away from it. The other thing would be is that the pipes would be so short, it would be loud.
imho

This did cross my mind. But wouldn't the greatly effected by where it exits? For example, if the exit was out the driverside, it would be an issue.

On this, I'm not sure. I would think the muffler would make more of a difference than 2-3 feet of extra exhaust pipe which would be gained by going out the back in an FJ40.

I drove airport equipment setup like this, and we were always choking on exhaust fumes driving it.

DO IT! Maybe we will get to watch you drive over a cliff, passed out from fumes, on Max X.:flipoff2:

Why don't you just put open headers through the hood like the mud guys do? :flipoff2: Another thing to think of is that where you are talking about putting the muffler would be right under the radiator (right?) and you don't want any more HEAT up front than you need.

Thanks for the serious answer CrazyHorse. That is what I wanted to have confirmed :)

:flipoff2: Couple of reasons NOT to do that: I don't think my EFI would appreciate it. My rig is going to be CA smog legal. I can't stand open pipes. Plus, if the fumes would be an issue with the exhaust going to the side, I would think straight up pipes would be the same issue.

If I were going to do it, the "edge" of the muffler would be just in "front" of the radiator(look out, ascii art on the way) This is a top view of what it would have looked like:

============= Front of Radiator
~~~~~~~~~~~ Back edge of radiator
! !
~~~~~~~~~~~ Front edge of radiator
########### Bumper

With this in mind, I don't think the radiator would have contributed much heat to the radiator.

Thanks for the input guys. Definately good info. Now I just have to figure out how to route my exhaust out the back of the cruiser:(

How come this sounds like the start of a trip to the emergency room.

In CO it wouldn't pass smog,they won't even let it exit out befor the rear wheels.

I'm pretty sure this is the case in CA also, unless it came from the factory that way....

With the exhaust running through the hood the engine will blow the fumes up.

I've never smelled fumes.

Good point. I wasn't aware of there being a smog issue also :(

Oh well, glad I asked before "commiting" to it :p
