404 portal gear hardness FYI!!!!

For anyone intrested, the spur gear in a 404 portal hub is a hardness of RC 63.

I assume since wear is pretty even, that the larger drive gear is the same. Not sure if this says anything, but their it is.

I remember being impressed when I broke my gears that the teeth simply did not break off at the root diameter.They actually "tore" metal from below the Root dia.
The grain structure was vey nice and even indicating proper heat treating with a decent alloy. I never did send a piece to the lab to see the metalurgical properties though.

It is a very typical 8620 gear steel surface hardened. 99% of gears are made like this with this alloy.
