I have a 93 YJ with the stock transmission, 4 cyl.

I had the tranny rebuilt and the clutch replaced about a year ago.

My problem: It shudders bad in first gear when I've been driving for a while (normal driving/engine warmed up)(seems not to be as bad when it's cold)......Reverse is even worse and it's almost to the point that I have to push the clutch back in and let it out fast to avoid breaking something from the shuddering thats going on.

Obviously the clutch is not slipping smoothly like it should, but could there be a tranny problem also? Would a combination of the 2 cause my rig to shake violently? Or is it just the clutch?

I haven't wheeled since I got my tranny and clutch replaced.

Yes, "violent" is the correct word.

it could be clutch, it could be transmission, although I would expect more of a grinding or metal to metal noise if it were a tranny problem (but maybe not) it could also be the transmission mount or maybe engine mounts? It's hard to tell... could be any umber of things. It could even be a problem in your t-case... although again I would expect a grinding or metal to metal noise...

Good Luck, hope you get it figured out!

Warpped pressure plate? When you install a plate you should always draw the 6 bolts down by hand and evenly around. Then torque to specs. If it was done a year ago, and didn't have any problems until now, I would check that all of the bolts that attach the bell-housing to the engine are still tight. If the bell-housing isn't square to the engine, the same chatter will occur.

I wouldn't worry too much about the tranny. Usually chatter is caused from above, or even a rear main dumping oil on the plate.

Pilot bushing always needs to be changed when the clutch is changed. Sometimes is overlooked. If the bushing was worn at the time the clutch was installed eventually overtime you will get some chatter and alot less life out of your new clutch. $6.00 for a bushing can save you a couple hundred bucks down the road. :D

Its not the trans. The pilot bearing could be the prob, or the comon one is you burn the clutch. Slipping it or leaving your foot on the pedel as you drive. Also oil will do that or flywheel is to thin, Turned to many times. If you had bad hot spots and cracks in the flywheel before, that could also be coming up.

I'll bet they (not me) didn't change the pilot bearing and there's just enough play to make it chatter........Thanks guys..I'll be giving them a call.

No oil leaks that I know of.....yet....and I don't know about the thickness of the flywheel.
