: double sami tcases?

i just had thought. i have a 4.89 sami case, what if i put a stock t case in front of it? i know it would have no high range which doesn't matter. if i just changed the shfter on the stock case so it could use 2-low then it wouldn't even spin the front d.shaft flange on the front case. in low-low i would have a crawl ratio of 213:1 which is right where i want to be. do you think the cases could handle it? it would be like $100 and some fab work to more than double my low range. i can't remember what the high range gears are so i'm not even sure how bad it would be. it's just going to be on the trails so i don't think it would be a big deal. 94:1 is nowhere near as low i had hoped it would be.

Ok,you wanna' explain how you would run two t-Case's?
pic's or diagrams. or anything would be nice.
I could do this for cheeeeeepo..i have spare just laying there..

well i'm having trouble seeing an easy way to mate two of the sami cases together without offsetting the rear driveshaft even more. what other divorced t cases are out there? there must be a cheap way to get the gears down.

I've heard of many people doing this with succession around here.... there's also the OTT thing with the tracker tranny with mated case to stock sammy case... that work well but costs $$$$ compared to two stockers

poppycock
10-01-2001, 06:20 PM
how are they connecting the 2 cases? the rear output is offset and the input needs to be centerd. do they just space them apart enough and connect with a shorty shaft with a compound angle? if i can do this i would sure like to. any info, pics, etc... is WANTED! i'd like to keep my t case as close to it's orginal position as possible and then stuff another one in front of it.

the other option is the adapter ott is coming out with that lets you run the toy cases divrced from the the tranny. the aa reduction box is $400 and then a toy tcase is like $100 then the ott adapter $$$? and shorten the little tranny driveshaft. it's the only way i could see myself running dual toy cases any time soon. it's at least affordable. and cheaper than $1000 6:1 sami case that i keep hearing about. also get the toy stuff.

wonder what it would cost to set up a sidekick tranny, sidekick reduction box, and hook them to the sami case. rick weren't you talking about this setup?

well, everyone and their brother uses toyota drivetrains in the sami, so bolt in a toyota drivetrain with married T-case, and run a nissan case divorced.

it will be plenty strong, and should be able to be done out of the yard pretty cheap.

i had no idea it was so simple. i like the ott adapter and dual toy cases alot. didn't realize the adapter was $325 but it would be well spent. anyone interested in a grs2 case?

rick was talking about that setup... it will cost you lots but it's worth it.. I've seen the sidekick tranny to sidekick reduction to stock sammy case and it's a good setup but it only works on lwb sammy's from what I know... and from what I've also been told the dual toy cases wont work unless you stretch the frame like two inches or something......

Poppyseed, I remember seing somewhere that Mike Shaffer in his swb sami had a kick tranny and gear reduction box hooked up to the GRS II. I remember seeing it on the Suzuki off-road BBS about 8 months ago, do a search. So don't get rid of that GRS II yet. He had a 170:1 crawl gear ratio if I remember rightly, that should be more than enough to turn those 38's.

i'm kinda wanting to get this thing going so i think i'm going to just put a rebuilt 1.3 engine back in and use the sami tranny. so the divorced toy setup seems like it would work best for me. length isn't really a concern. my frame is stretched quite a bit already. and from my calcualations if i run 2 AA cases at 2.28 and then 1 toy case at 2.28 i could have a 228:1 low range and do it for around $1200 and maybe some driveline mods depending on how long it would actually be. might be too many shifters but its cheaper than buying the toy 4:1 gearset. i don't think i've ever seen a grs2 for sale before i have no idea what to ask for it. i have to call ott and see just what i'm for if i go this route first.

the grs2 is like 14 months old with like 4 moths use on it. to say it's cherry would be an understatement. it's the complete case from petroworks. it has the 2-low split H shift pattern and a spidertrax billet shifter knob. i paid $1200 what is it worth?

I have seen a dual-Samurai t-case rig and I must say it was an interesting setup. To get the output(s) close enough to work, you must rotate the 1st (front) case clockwise until the shifter is almost parallel to the ground. He cut a hole in the side of the tranny tunnell, then bent the shifter up. It leaked when the rig's driver side was elevated more than ~1 foot. You mount the 2nd t-case almost in the stock position (rotationally) but farther back. The gearing was good for a trail rig, but even with stock gears you got 1.41 x 1.41 in high range = a lot of reduction. Supposedly, those guys are going to be selling a kit for this swap, but I don't really know them - probably find more info on the ORC Zuki board search.

What if you put in a stock nissan case in FRONT of the stock sami case, wouldn't that get the offset problem taken care of? You could probably build a crossmember that would hold the two cases, without shaft between them (maybe a u-joint only) and a super short intermediate shaft between the nissan t-case and the transmission. Shouldn't be too much longer than stock would it? Also you could turn the nissan case upwards (clock it) so that the front outputs would not interfere.

Hope I'm not too far off

toygeek i'm going to find a nissan case and look. there is room to fit a small divorced case in between the stock one and the tranny. and yes as long as it's input and rear output are centerd i don't see why it wouldn't work. i bet it's stronger than the sami case too.

this is why I would put it in back, the stronger one further downstream, since it will see more torque than the first one.

o.k. mine is an offrad only rock buggy zook thing and i'm running the zook case first and nissan case 2nd but, i'm bolting it directly to the front output on the sammy case. so it's backward but it turns the right direction . the nissan case has the input on the top and both outputs are centered. the case is vertical in design and it is about 8" from upper input to lower outputs. a buddy is machinng a 1" adapter fer me and i have not run it yet but it should work great. the nissan case is in the center of the frame this way and with 9" of lift, my drivelines are only at 5 degree angle to the case. cooool huh !!!

Poppyseed,
Call Gary @ Petroworks. I spoke with him today about a "Planitary" system (4:1 ?) that takes the place of the trans drive shaft. He said something about less than $1000. This would give you street driving and multiple gear reduction choices.

I still think you should "Stretch" your rig to fill that extra frame. I have an extra hardtop body that "you" can have for free if you do it.

Have Fun

sounds cool but next spring? also with another 4:1 box i would be at 377:1 a little overkill. i think i'm going with the AA reduction box, AA 4:1 gears in the toy case and just mount them with the ott adapter to my sami tranny. also to afford all the gears i think i'll just go with 1300 engine and a 1600 head?

so it looks as if i'll be selling the grs2 very, very, very, soon.

The Klune gets you deep in first but how about 2nd 3rd and 4th, nothing wrong with using those gears is there? The ranges I looked at with the Klune would be nice in 2nd,3rd and 4th, and ya 1st was just silly. But the amount of money were talking could feed a small country for a few years! Someone tell me more about the Petro underdrive, I'm interested.

petroworks had no info on this thing except that he wasn't really sure what it was and it would be a long time before it came out. but if it's like a klune for around $1000 that would be cheapest most effective gearing option... if it existed.

Fatkid, they wouldnt give any specs on it....though with all the people using kick and toy stuff..i see it something like that....i mean they are only selling for a grand???
I looked at the Klune set up also, that is very nice!! Very little mods to the rig, easy install and what you dont realize is you can run in High on your tcase and then run low on the Klune and you are about 124:1 in first gear!!
That is with a GRS1, Klune and 5.38's...the gearing options are amazing when you put a second case in there.

I'm trying, but I have a LOT of work to get either rig trail worthy enough for the trip. The rear 60 is still spun and I am having a hard time finding someone that can spin it back and weld the tubes to the housing. I'm trying though.

if the klune is a 4:1 box then won't it put a crapload of stress on the sami case? the klune is in the same ballpark as the marlin crawler box and 4.7 gears. well it is by the time you buy the ott adapter and modifie drivelines and switch your rearend out to a centerd diff. depending on what you do it could actually be cheaper. but how will the sami case hold up? in low low the klune and my grs2 would working at a 19.56:1 reduction. right no my case is a 4.89:1 thats a lot more stress.
