Soooo. I am a very indecisive SOAB. I bought a dom-z-link from snoopy to go with my stock scout axles.

I now have this
http://www.wootworx.com/images/buildup/IMG_2360%20(Small).JPG

I want to go el cheapo for now. Because later I will go for crane knuckles and hy-steer. I need it hi-way safe, and sand dunable... No rocks untill it gets hysteer beef.

Options..thoughts...suggestions

Waggy axle??

Bolt them in, run a Z-link an call it good.

Why crane knuckles?? You hear LOTS of people having issues with stock flat-tops?? For a rec. wheeler seems like a waste of money but hey, to each its own.

I like High-Steer, but I have no issues with Z-links, if they are built well enought, they can last. Save the D&C one for a later project, or cut it down to use with this axle.

Whats so special about the pictured axle any way? Why do you want to use it over what you have now..... wait, what the heck IS that axle in the pic? Looks SUA, passenger side diff, but the hubs look to be 8-lug, but not like normal 8-lug axles, more like 1/2 ton hubs with 8-lugs....

:wtf:

Its a full width 44. Out of a full size jeep. not waggy. 74 p/u 6 bolt pattern of some sort
and not a flat top...

Why did you get a front axle that is set up sprung under .
Aren't you going SOA ?

Good question - I was wondering the same myself. At first I thought it was just 'upside' - but the knuckles and brake bracket don't lie...

For quick and dirty steering, without flat tops, build a super stout Z link using ends that match what you have.

Then down the road go spend $50 on a set of flat tops - $50 to get them machined and $100 to get an arm and raise up the drag link and ditch the Z link - build your own drag link with some DOM and weld in threaded inserts.

If it's out of a wide-track J-truck, the Z-link he has won't work - it's not long enough.

SUA J-truck front end would be a good setup if you wanted to run SUA but full width - retain happier leaf springs and still get a wide n' stable stance after you sawzall the body.. along with being able to turn. :D

Find someone building a low-rider Chevy truck 4x4 and trade for the Chevy truck SOA front end.. buy one high-steer arm and a new lengthened draglink and call it good.

No it will be soa. Less work than the scout one. Thats for sure..

Im thinking beefy z-link right now....

It is a FULL WIDTH Dana 44 out of a 74 Jeep pickup...

I'm kind of going to be running that same axle in my trail rig project, that axle (which, in my case, came out of a mid 70's Cherokee Chief) is about 2.5" narrower overall than a full-width Chevy...about 2" on the pass. side, .5" on the dr. side. The only drawback to using that axle is that it's a lot easier to find Chevy inner axle shafts in the junkyard than J-truck and Cherokee Chief shafts.

Cant find any cheap full width 44's for SOA. Plus its a 2.5'' spring, will take grinding regardless I'd assume.. Barely any more work.

I've given some thought to taking out my Chevy SOA front end and stock leaf springs for the FSJ SUA D44 and some 4" lift springs.

I'd get more usable suspension travel, the springs would last longer, and I'd lower my ride height a little while raising my bump-travel.

Unfortunately, I'm too lazy to get 'round to it. :D Besides, I keep thinking I want to link the front and dump the leaves entirely, though it might hurt me class wise.

On the plus side for your axle shaft problem - you can have Moser (and others) shorten a Chevy D44 axle - say, one that someone twisted the splines off of.

We do that for EBs a lot.

I'm really surprised you can't find a GM D44 in your area. I've seen housings only for free in my neck of the woods.

I don't see that axle beeing any less work to SOA than a Scout housing, and argue that a GM housing is still the eaiest. But hey, use what you got.

Actually I wouldn't mind a couple of those axles myself... but for a couple of SUA projects. I usually can't find THOSE housings cheap in my area.... but then I won't pay more that $100 for a D44 unless I REALLY need it :D

Damian, you are officially the devil on my shoulder, through and through.
Im working on finding a different front axle. Namely a 2 inch wider chevy. aith flat tops, and maybe SOA if its avail.

Ditto - GM D44's are the easiest by far. And they can usually be had for dirt cheap around here as well. U-Pull it has them for $125.
