first time opening up my 80 cj7. the amc has a recessed gasket surface, is a real pain to seat the gasket on it correctly. any tips? was thinking of using high tack to hold it in place in the housing, letting it set, then putting the siliconed- cover on.

couldn't you just use silicone? That's all I have on my diffs... Unless there's something specific to the 20 that requires an actual gasket and silicone.

Before I replaced the Junk 20 with a Currie 9"on my CJ7 I found that some of the gaskets would not fit perfectly in the recess (gasket to big)I would cut a small portion out of the gasket so it would fit the recess.Next I would use Permatex form a gasket #2B to secure the gasket in place with the cut at 12 oclock.I would then use Permatex on the cover then bolt it on.

I agree. Section the gasket and put the cut a 12 oclock. Then also use some sort of sealant.

All I ever used was RTV silicon. Forget the gasket.

I had problems with mine quite a bit. I tried Gasket, RTV and gasket, etc.

The best way that I found is "Indian Head" and the gasket. The stuff is like snot, and works like a charm.

You can get it at Autobone. (Or I'm sure other places would have it)

I've run a small bead of silicone, let it set for a few minutes to tack up, then bolt it up finger tight.

Here's the trick.

Let it cure for a few hours (overnight if possible) before torquing the bolts up.

I've had 0 leaks with this method... too bad you can't use it at the pinion.

I used a couple of dabs of chassis grease to hold the gasket in place until I could get the cover on. Worked fine.

I got sick of replacing the gasket, I just use RTV now too. Run a nice big bead all around the cover , kinda go around the bolts toward the inside of the cover. Let is set up a little. slap that sucker on there, crank the bolts down and scrape off the excess.

I was a little apprehensive the first time I sealed it without the gasket, but its never leaked a drop.
