I just got this cherokee and have not had it running. My plan was to get the EFI parts off it to put in my 79 CJ (on a budget), but I would like to get it started first. I checked fuel pressure and distributor output which seemed fine. Not sure where to go next (used to carbs when everything was easy to diagnose, just hard to keep running when climbing). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

if it jus cranks without firing. than unplug the crank positioning sensor then plug it back in. its located at the back of the engine on top and should have a three prong connector iirr.:)

is it an automatic. if it doesn't turn over, could be the neutral safty switch. i have a 93 cherokee and i have to move the shifter around. see if it helps if yo0u put it in neutral.

I used to have one and had the same problem if I didn't run it on a regular basis. I was told that the fuel pump was going.

Often this is the Crank Positioning switch.
It sits on top of the bell housing up against the engine.
it is about an $80 part but you can usually find them at the junkyard.
Should always have a spare if you are offroad....my friend's experience, unless you like being strapped back to town.

tried the unplug and re-plug the CPS, still not firing. Used starter fluid, and still nothing. I thought this was simple, compression, spark, flamable vapor, it should try to start????? Oh well, I may go ahead and replace the CPS. Its worth a try. Any more ideas?
