: What do you think about the 2006 Dodge Meg Cab

What do you think about the 06 Ram heavy duty vs ford and chevy? I'm getting a new full size diesel truck and leaning toward a 2006 Dodge 2500 with mega cab and cummins. I think the mega cab is a little goofy looking but it is growing on me and I can definately use all the room. I see the cummins now comes with stock 4" exhaust which is cool.

If you have one or have driven one please chime in with your impressions.

Also I need to decide manual or auto trans, I want an auto but I have heard the dodge tranny is weak so I am leaning towards the 6 speed.

The Dodge auto is NOT weak. Get it if you want it. It drives and tows very nicely. Can't comment on the mega cab though. Mine is 05 quad cab.

I love my new mega cab. There is all the room you'll ever need and you forget that it looks a little goofy when you have people inside with more room than in their cars. Go with a 3500 if you want the diesel b/c dodge was kind enough to make the diesel a $6k upgrade for the 2500. Let me know if you have any questions.

I drive them at work all the time. Yes, they are goofy looking(IMO), but form over function, ya know?

If going SRW... Get the 2500 or the 3500.. Whatever they have on the lot with the features you want. The price difference will be minimal.

The interior of the new Dodges really suck. I was sold on an '04.5-05 when I was looking (bought a chevy though due to the bigger back seat) but I loved the two tone leather and brushed alumnium look. Now they have this wood grain BS and single color seats. I know its petty but I'm sickened by it. The Chevy is best for that with no wood grain.

Oh yeah if you get past that, I think the drive train is great. I would only buy the 3500 for legal/warranty reasons, but either or should be fine.

The 6 speeds have a dual mass flywheel I think. I would be a little leary about that. I looked at the mega cab long enough for my eyes to focus on the 54k sticker price.

If you need the interior room, go for the mega cab.. Tranny is a personal preference.. I love my 6 spd, but its the NV5600, and not the G56 or whatever it is they are putting in em now.. I think the Mega cab makes the truck useless if you want to use it as a TRUCK.. But then again, I never have liked shortbeds.

I have a 2006 Mega Cab with the Cummins and the 6 speed. I got it last September and have around 12,000 miles already. I am very happy with my truck. As far as a short bed not being a real truck, I think that is such a cop out. Kind of "My dad can beat up your dad".

Anyway, I have been very partial to the Dodge/Cummins product and wanted a 3500 6 speed 4x4. Love it.

the way the Dodge Megacab CTD 2500 and 3500 were priced according to the latest TDR issue, the 3500 is cheaper than the 2500

So then you might as well go with the 3500, if it works out to be that way ;)

I think the megacab's are cool, but one thing to think about is that the GVW for the trucks stayed the same, but the weight went up, which means a mega cab has lesss "legal" capacity than a quad cab. Also, the new mega cab dually that is coming out has a 10,500 GVW, where a quad cab has a 12000 (may be 12,400) lb GVW, so they actually lowered it, which makes it almost useless in my view.

Didn't mean for it to come across that way.. Its really a personal preference thing.. I just don't like shortbeds... obviously a lot of people do, considering thats what Dodge sells the most of.

I would rather have room to have sex in the back seat than for a load in the bed. That's what I own two trailers for.

I have the same problem with the check engine light when its cold, once it figures itself out the light goes out. Its gonna go back to the dealer for that, its more irritating than anything else, but when I jump it to go pick something up thats 400 mi away I hate staring at the check engine light on my new truck.

I have an 03 Quad Cab Cummins 6 speed and absolutely love it. I have driven an 06 Mega Cab and for me they are just too huge but if you have a big family or lots of shit it would be perfect. I personally wish Dodge would extend the Quad Cab five inches.

I'm looking for a new truck, but prices in Canada are whacked

Scott, just curious, how much are you guys selling this truck for:

06 3500 Quad cab, non mega, SRW
CTD, 6 speed

air, cruise, tilt, pwr windows/locks, premium audio, power drivers seats (not sure whats standard equip)

Not sure what other options i want, or are available.

Around here, it'd be over 50k

I drove all of the big 3 in one day just to see their differences back to back. Dodge interior sucked ballz. fit and finish was terrible, the extra room in the mega cab kicked ass. I'm 6'5" and can sit with my legs crossed in the back seat with the front seat slid all the way back. Auto tranny felt junky compared to the ford and Chevy. Like they slammed a gas tranny behind a Diez. Also I knew the HP and Torque were there but the truck really was a slug compared to the others. Shoulda driven a 6 spd. Interior really was a let down though, plastic didn't really seem to fit. Hopefully first year jitters. Maybe wait till next yr or a few more come off the line.

ON the 6-speed front, I have read complaints about extended start time due to dual mass flywheel, just FYI since you asked about issues. I havent heard much of anything else, the G56 overdrive is a little higher also, that will help with mantaining grade in gear. That's all I know.

That ~basically~ describes my truck... Mine's an 05. 2500 (so like $600 less). But it's an auto (so like $1000 more)... You can get them all day long here for about 31-32k.

02-10-2006, 04:55 AM
If I had not bought the toter I'd probably have one- the only thing that would have held me back is the tranny decision- I've never been an auto guy (for a tow rig) and I have not heard how the new auto's are doing when you tweak to 800 ft lbs and tow 10k all the time. The G56 6 speed was a mistake IMHO- dual mass flywheel, AL case and a stupid low 6th.

My 03 3500 QC SRW SB 6 speed with 3.73's and 35's is still geared too low for me- but if you added 20" of cab to it it would be about perfect:)

I had been holding out for the mega cab for months and they were practically giving away the quad cab 2500's. My buddy gave in and got a quad cab and then drove in and rode in my mega cab and has been kicking himself in the ass ever since. I think too much cab space is like too many days off or too much beer.

Too much time off and too much beer are likely why anyone would need that grotesquely oversized Mega Cab with it's almost uselessly small bed. Dodge really hit the nail on the head with the Cummins but can't seem to get the cab size "just right".

I've got an 06 3500 quad cab. I wanted the dually and full size bed, so I went that way. Also, the only people that I ever inteded to ride in the back seat are kids, so the qc was the obvious choice. Two weeks ago I took a 500 mile road trip with 2 tall guys in teh back and no complaints.

Just for interest sake that Mega cab is on the same wheelbase as a long bed quad cab. It uses a stock 6.5' short bed. Almost like Dodge chose the cab size by using current available products. Clever huh? GM has been doing it for half a century.

Personally i like the cab size, that is why I didn't by an '05 Dodge, and my only complaint on my Chevy is not enough cab room. A tow rig doesn't need a huge box, it needs a big cab, and stout running gear.

Bottom line.. if you need cab space buy the mega cab.. I think they look goofy, and I can't stand short beds, but seems to me there are an awful lot of whiners here that complain about cab space in the quad cab 3rd gens.. Ive had 6 full grown adults in my truck, with no problems.

Oh and Scott, there is no way that even one 6+ ft adult (or a lady friend with her laptop) is comfortable in the back of a Quad cab for 1000 mile journeys. And I sure can't see why anyone would need a long bed in a 2500. What are you carrying? Feathers? A full long bed of lumber, bricks or soil will easily exceed the payload of the truck, so why bother wasting your time with it?

I've got a 02 2500 QC short box with a topper. It's sweet! It's a compact truck that's easy to park, hauls ass and likes to work. I don't haul anything in the bed but trail and camp gear. If I haul anything heavy it goes on the flat bed.
