I'm running a two alt system. One for charging and one for welding. Should I have the welder spinning all the time or not ? If I leave the belt off and only use it when needed, the chances of crap getting in there and not getting back out increase and premature failure could result.. Right ??? So anyway for those with welders, do you leave it spinning or only use it when needed ??

I've got my onboard welder spinning all the time. But I'm running a serpentine belt system and didn't want to fawk around with adding a second pulley to something for part time use:p

I'm bought a 150 AMP rebuilt GM alt w/ heavy duty rotor, diodes, and a 1" pulley for 100.00 from Boyle Future Tech in Auburn. Bought some used cable and a atinger from the local repair guy for 15.00. I'm going to mount it directly over my York since it already has a dual 6" pulley. Boyle says I'll only need to run the engine at no more than 1800 - 2000 RPM's with that pulley set-up. Amps will be controlled via Hand throttle. I'm going to add 110 to it later as all I had in the budget was 150.00. But I can't figure out if I should spin the rotor all the time or not. I guess I just call Boyle on Monday.

Booger 60-70 amps won't cut it. I would also recommend running two alts ( your stock toy and something else ) I just like the added security of not using your charging system as a welder, plus if your does go out, you can use the GM as a back up..
