: 88 Trooper - SAS Wagoneer or Yota Axle?

I know there has been a ton of posts about everyones fav. axle to use when doing SAS.

I have been looking around at local junk yards and such for a 74-79 Wagoneer. So I can start my SAS.

But the more I look around, I am seeing a ton of product support for the yota axles, including of course longfield shafts....

I plan to run 35's, and I would like to keep my 12bolt in the rear.

I don't know if they make gears that would match available gears for the 12 bolt (4.11/4.77/5.38s)

So what do you guys think? Is it worth for me to keep looking for the waggy axle (which i think would be the easiest) or go for a 80's yota axle?

your gear options with the zu 12 bolt are 4.11 (actually i don't know wht these would have come in), 4.30, 4.56, 4.77, and 5.38 (although there are only a very limited supply of these left).

the 5.29's come close enough to the 5.38's to work with no problem. there are also factory 4.56's w/ toyota. i dunno if the wag axle would really end up 'easier'. you might try the search as this has all been discussed a few times over. if you have a specific question, or more specific information (what type of wheelin for example) we can help you mo betta :grinpimp:

You will be good to go with either one I think that matching the gear ratio's with your 12 bolt would be a little easier with the D44. I used a D44 and went with 4.56 to match the 12 bolt. Check out this thread http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=429020 It covered the strengths and issues with both axles pretty well.

Ya, I have been reading as much as I can about the waggy axle, just because I was thinking it was the 'best' option, but now I think I am going to look into the yota axle a little more.

I like the idea that I can find a 4.56 to match my rear, and also the narrower width is nice. I don't want to have a huge hassel to make it street legal because it is technically my DD. (3min drive to work and back, thats it)

Well I am going to research the yota axles some more before I start asking more questions.

As for wheeling, it would be moderatly used since there is a few guys around here (VT,NH,ME) that I have gone riding w/ for awhile. Mud/Rocks/ hill climbing,etc... I will be running w/ 2 FJ40s, a sami & a yota sometimes...

I’m doing the opposite; I need a Corp 12 bolt to go with my Wagoneer 44 front. This looks like the best configuration for +/- 60 inches WB, 5.38s, six lug, Disc breaks and heavy duty. I already have lots of $$ in the 44 to switch. I have looked at several Troopers today from 88-92 and cannot find a 12 bolt rear, just 10 bolts. What is the best way to find one these axles? I cannot find any Amigos, or Isuzu trucks in this area to compare.

looks like a good solution

look for any isuzu axle that has disc brakes and is third member style and it will be a 12 bolt

They all had a 3rd member style drop out and discs, but they only had 10 bolts around them?? I looked up trooper under ARB applications. The bigger rear axle with 1.5'' 23 spl shafts are only on 1998 and up models. Check it out http://www.arbusa.com/alac/215110.pdf

yeah the 12 bolts refer to the bolts on the ring gear that you can't see unless you pull the 3rd. 88-91 are leaf sprung, ~58" wide, 92-97 are coil/link, and like 62-65" depending. the bigger ones are the 98+ and good luck finding gears for them.

I am running a wag 44 up front on my rig. I like how it is the same as the rear for most of the parts.

I pulled my Dana 44 out of a 1974 full size Jeep Cherokee WideTrac with quadratrack(to get the passenger side drop). I am putting this up front of my VX and am going with 538's front and rear. I got the gears from Matt off of www.Independent4x.com . I found the Aussie Locker for the Dana 44 off of Ebay for $239 shipped to my door and I will probably have two set up 3rd members one open diff welded to be locked for offroad and the other Limited slip for everyday driving. It only takes like 20 minutes to change out 3rd members. When I go wheeling I can take both 3rd and do the swap at the trails or when I do things like ZuZoo or Rubicon or High Desert Round up in Mojave.

My rear axle is a Corporate 12 bolt 26 spline Limited slip 5.38 Ring and Pinion with disc breaks and coil sprung 6 bolt pattern with 5.5"spacing
Front Dana 44 Widetrack(62" track...not WMS to WMS), 30 inner spline, 19 outer spline(upgradable to 30 spline), Warn Premium Manual Hubs, Aussie Locked, 5.38 Ring and Pinion, Flat top knuckles (standard '74 and up) high steer with 1" spacers, tapered for GM 1ton drag links, spring over, 6 bolt pattern 5.5" spacing, and disc breaks.
