I just traded my jeep for another and this one
has a eaton rear. The problem is the driver side
wheel cylinder is leaking bad. Since i have no idea
what this rear end came out of. what do i tell the
part guy? I got some number off the axle, not sure if
will help much (3934635)
And the guy i got it off of said it was a 14bolt eaton.
Did he take some parts off a 14bolt?
thanks

Does the Chunk pull out like a Ford 9 inch, and the rear cover look like a AMC20. If so, it is an eaton. These came stock in 1 ton and larger Chevy trucks from about 1960-1972 or so. Tough axle.

They are refered to as old style 14 bolts, but they are eatons. Parts are hard to come by. I had one but couldn't find parts, plus unless you weld the rear or it had a gov lock there is no locker available for them anymore. Needless to say I junked it.

I can still get parts, most of the time for mine. Mine is from a 64 Chevy 3/4 ton, 2wd. You can still find the original Detroit aswell, you just got to keep your eyes open, but they are out there.

The eatons came in Chevrolets up untill '69 or '70, they are a beefy unit, fairly popular here in TN. They were replaced by the 14 bolt....I had one that I was going to run, but it had 4.11's and I ran across a 14 with the correct gears and traded my eaton in on some tires....but when I had it Napa was able to order all the brake parts and gaskets and seals for it. Hillbilly is right, you can still find the detroits for them, infact I saw one forsale not to long ago on the TN4x4 message board fosale. and you can convert them to disc brakes as well.

Hope this helps,
Justin

p.s. the yj looks good

David- how long did you live here? there really isn't any good places around here. Theres a couple of trails around the mines. but nothing exciting.

Here's another question i need answered, how much fluid does the eaton hold?

Thanks

if it is an eaton with 14 bolt shafts then it has 14 bolt side gears
from the looks of that rig I would say it probably has the gears welded up if it doesn't already have the detroit in it
I really doubt someone would go to that much trouble and leave it open? that's a nice looking rig
I got all the parts I needed for mine from napa
it's most likely out of a 3/4 ton chevy 1969 to 70
if you want to beef it up get a 1/2 inch sewer weld cap and weld it on the rear
good luck

first of all i wanna say that is a nice looking jeep, i plan on builiding a similar one with full width axles and hummer wheels on 39.5 boggers. But anyway as for eaton rear axles . They were used from 46-72 and came in 3 ratios 410s,456,and 513s and with or with out the no-spin(detroit) 3 different pinions styles and at least 2 different drop out carrier designs . but hopefully yours came out of a 67-72 and they use the same disc brake brackets as a 14 bolt so if i were you convert it cause drums are a pain. Good Luck!

my buddy did this to his and talk about bash proof
yeah it weighs a ton, and you lose the rear access, but there is no more worrys about dragging the back of it off a rock
I'll try to post some pics of mine and my buddy's rearends soon.
whoa that sounds kinda :rainbow:

how close are your rims to the kingpin or ball joint, I was wondering cause I was told if you have ball joints hummer rims will rub but I've seen Dana 60's with kingpins running them fine. Does anybody know if a Hummer rim will fit on a Dana 44 with ball-joints? PLease help I need rims soon.

thats cool fred but to be honest i have been running these rears for a long time and it is still kind of nice beinb able to remove the rear cover and drain the oil and so forth but i am sure you could still utilize the original bolt on lip and then weld that on! Also there is like two differnt thickness covers and the thicker one is pretty strong or at least i have never had a problem with it! Oh yeah and by the way i have another eaton for sale if you know anyone interested?

I talked with some guy from Randy's Ring and Pinion at EJS. They have new gears for the Eaton. Also a 14 bolt Detroit will fit in it with minor machining. You might as well convert to discs its easy.

My front axle has 2 inch spacers, to keep the rims away.
