Buddy gave me a cutting torch to run off propane and I need to get a tip for it. I know it's an Airco type but don't know what size I should get. I've been thinking about a 1 but I don't really know. The most I'd need to cut is probably 1/4 inch plate, and occasionally cut through a bolt or something.

I'd get an 0(for 3/8 to 1/2) and a 2(for up to 1"). The smaller tips help keep the heat even and a good smoother cut on thin stuff. You might want to stick with a smaller tip- 00 is good for 1/4", maybe get a 1 for up to 3/4". A washing tip is handy for cutting frozen bolts, say against a frame. It helps keep from gouging into the metal you want to save. HTH :D

Yeah, that helps. I'll probably pick up a 0 for now. Thanks.

Have you used a propane torch before? I think they can be a little finicky to start, but once its lit its :cool2: . Its awesome you got a free one, wish I had a deal like that. :)

Never used one before. Any suggestions? Pressure settings?

There should be specs from airco's site with more details... I think the specs I have are for Victor, they should be close enough.
With a 0 tip, Oxygen at 25-30, Propane at 3-5 lbs.
I have this handy little card from my welding class to keep in my wallet. If I'm not using the torch every day, I forget the settings. :D

I have a 0 tip on mine and it works fine for what I do. I rarely work with anything over a 1/4" anyway.
Just be careful when you light it. If it doesnt light right away the propane will hang in the air and can flash back on you. I've singed the hair on my hand a couple times.

I have never used anything but propane. And have never had any trouble cutting anything assuming you have the right tip and enough oxygen pressure.

When lighting propane, you'll want to start out with just a little bit at a time, add a little oxygen, then a little propane, and work your way up to the proper volume. If you add too much oxygen at once, it can blow out. At least that was my experience with propylene.
