Freshly rebuilt 258 4.2 motor in MY YJ, I was out crawling and rolled my Jeep on the Roof, It took my friend and I maybe 10 min to winch it back over, then I started it right up and drove it maybe a quarter of a mile and put it back on the trailer, today I let it idle for about 15 min, is this enough time to let the smoke clear? Its is still smoking why? Did I burn my rings in my motor up? The engine runs great but still smokes should it be ran longer still? Or should It be rebuilt cause of the rings. and what the hell has this happened to any one else?

I've been told that when you roll a vehicle over you should pull the spark plugs before you start it to blow the oil out and not hydro-lock it. Maybe you were just lucky, maybe it's just the oil that got up into the intake manifold burning off.

If it's only been run for a totoal of 25 minutes in two small increments where the engine didn't have time to completely heat up and burn the oil, you may just need to drive it a bit. Your plugs could alos be fouled from all the burning oil. Those are the two cheapest / quickest analyses. I'd run it for a while, drive ti around, etc. That oil can get caught up in the top of the head in pools, which take some good heat to burn out. if it hasn't stopped smoking after about 30 minutes of good driving, you might try the plugs. If that's not it, then you should start worrying about bigger problems.

Whats this I hear? You didn't pull the plugs before starting it up? You're lucky then to not have hydraulicked it.

Ditto on what E1 said.

I was wheeling one day above Central City, Colo, and this dude was showing off to his girlfriend in his wrangler in a puddle about 18" deep. He got water into the engine, and when I found him he was on his cell phone caling a tow Co.!
To make a long story short, I got him going by following procedures. :D

glad to hear the cage worked... good advertising for Unique Concepts

motor should be fine but you should have pulled the plugs, disabled the ignition system, turned it over a few times then put it back together and started it. you would have been sorry if you bent a rod.
