: 86 Chevy Steering??? Turns slow at first, then normal?

I know this will be hard to describe, but I am wondering what you think the problem is???

It seems as if there is NO play in my box...when I turn the wheel, the tires will turn, but for the first 1/8-1/4 turn of the wheel, the turn is slow...as if the truck had a 8 turn lock to lock box, then once you turn the wheel beyond that point, it seems to turn normal...3-4 turn lock to lock box...what ever it is...it's stock. So, the question is...do you think its the box, pump, or something else...Oh, and my linkage seems tight.

This is a 1 ton and I think it has the hydro assist brakes...

Any thing???

Thanks for the help.

Does this happen on all surfaces? Wet, dry, icy...?
Could be just the tires initial grab to the road surface causing resistance and once it breaks free, the tires can continue on thier merry way. Just a thought.

Belt does not slip...or at least it is not making any noise...I will check its tightness today.

As far as tire stickyness...not likely. The tires are SS SSR's and they are almost bald...I can't seem to get traction anywhere.

Variable ratio box...not unless they came stock that way? It does NOT steer safely. My Dad's old 86 chey definitely steered way better.

It also happens on all road conditions...doesn't matter.

It also seems to happen no matter where you are in a turn...it doesn't just happen when I am going straight and trying to slightly turn to keep it pointed strraight.

I just went through the same thing on my 86. Turned out the pump and box were trash. Old is old I guess :D

Is the truck in question by any chance a 97-99 OBS?
