Last week, I bought an 88. Trying to get it ready to run and I was into the front end today working on bearings and hubs.

With the front end off the gound, I did this test -

Passenger hub unlocked - only sound I could hear was brakes dragging

Passenger hub locked - I could hear gears turning in the diff, but the drive shaft was not turning

P/Driver hubs both locked, turning passenger side - drive shaft turned

Driver hub unlocked - same as passenger side

Driver locked/passenger unlocked - diff gears turn, driveshaft turns

So, my question is this - is this the way its supposed to behave? It seems both sides should act the same.

Yes it is completely normal. If you dont like it, weld it up. Then they both will turn whether they like it or not.

Yup sounds normal to me.....if you grenade one hub you are then in two wheel drive...or one wheel drive if the rear is open, so weld it or lock and drive with one hub unlocked (so you can turn) and lock them both when you need the traction....or buy an ARB and press a button."Allons fligner la mud"
