the old 38s rubbed on the floor of the cab and the body mount bad at full flex and turning. i am planning on narrowing the grill and hood and maybe scooting the front end an inch or two forward for more room. :smokin:

sounds like your plans are heading in the direction I took with my truck.

Im in the process of tapering the front via tube fenders right now, and the back is already tubed out.

actually according to my registration its a half ton 2wd ;)

oh and darketernal, this wont be anything too pretty like yours, i just need a rig for easter, then im gonna strip all my parts off and finally start my flatty buggy. so i dont wanna invest too much time or $ in this beat up chunk of steel.

this is the 7th easter in a row i have put another project in front of the flatty, i swear this is the year it will really happen.

i think i'll be able to fit my new 44s with 6" of lift. you ought to lower your bumpstops and run it like that. :D

Looking good Redd! that truck is hammered. I knew the 35's and 2" lift I have planned wouldn't be a problem, thanks for proving it LOL

im hoping i will be able to keep running my special invisible bumpstops ;) and just trim the hell out of the body (again). i dont wanna lift her any higher, she will barely fit under my little garage door now. if im still rubbing at full flex and max turning then i will think about investing in some bumpstops. this thing only needs to survive one more easter so im limiting the time/$ into it.

i may try to get some door skins and slap them on, cause im planning on driving this thing all 250 miles to moab in april, gotta look kinda legal, at least more than i do now.

yeah i had some old tired 38.5x14.50r15 sx's, soon to be assigned to spare tire duty.

should put in some zero-rates and move the axle forward 1.5", looks like you could really use that wont hit the firewall so much, would save alot of rubbing and give you 1" lift hehe

i already cut out some steel to make them out of, but im still not 100% sure i wanna make it any taller.

been thinking about drilling new holes in the spring perches and the spring plates about 2" behind the existing ones to push it forward, that way i can get around lifting her, anyone have any input?

BlueJeep

I'd drill new holes if you don't want to lift it anymore. Willyswanter did this several years ago keeping with the same theme -- no more lift.

yea either way is fine, as long as ur moving it out, at least 1.5-2", it really makes a huge difference

well i guess i will just make this my 2006 build thread. things i plan on doing before easter are:

-move front end 2" forward with custom 1/2" tall 0-rate leaves. (im makin em out of some 410 stainless i had kicking around in the shop) :grinpimp:

-narrow grill (about 24" narrower than stock)and taper fenders in, and taper hood down about 6" lower than stock at the grill.

-remove my bed, chop frame.

-put my old bench seat right behind the cab, facing backwards

-make a simple flat bed, extend the cage to the rear of the frame.

here she is without the fenders, look at all that wasted space that does nothing for me except ruin visibility!

i thought my previous fender hacking job was extreme, but it doesnt even compare to this.

this is what i took off and threw away, i cut each fender down from 25 pounds to only 5 pounds!

reddman
02-19-2006, 04:01 PM
here is whats left. the main reason i cut them up so high was to remove some rock rash from the passengers side fender, i cut out as little as i could to remove the offending sheet metal.

reddman
02-19-2006, 04:04 PM
here is the backside of the fender, i got rid of everything i could, so save as much weight as possible, because the way i am planning on mounting these requires that they be light.

edit: you can see the two items i am keeping from the fenders, the horn (so i can keep my dual tone, the other was mounted behind the grill), and that kick ass light that gm made. before i bobbed it that light would reach about 4 feet past the back of my longbed, fawkin impressive for a factory part imo.

reddman
02-19-2006, 04:10 PM
here is the grill mocked up, it will sit about 2" lower than it is in the pic, thats just the only place it would hold itself up. i completely removed the headlight sections, and will be grafting the orange corner lamps to the ends of the grill, and the headlights will be relocated to behind the grill. :smokin:

reddman
02-19-2006, 04:29 PM
by the way, the grill ended up about the same width as a jeep cj grill :grinpimp:

Cool, can't wait to see the finished product. I am currently building something similar to this for a friend and was kind of stumped on how to do the front clip. Only differnce is his is extra-cab, move fornt axle forward 12 inches and running rocks with 49 mich. and a coil, link suspension. Keep the pics coming.

Ever thought about maybe going with a longer spring in the front and just moving your front hanger forward. Could probably get 3-4" of forward movement, a lot more clearence for the floorboard issue. Just a thought.

I had to beat my floor pans in quite a bit at the lower front corner, worked good though. Makes them the same radius as the tire instead of a sharp point.

my good friend jb weld is what is holding the sections of grill together. there is also a few self drilling screws i put in to keep it straight while the epoxy cured, they may or may not be permanent.

btw, jb weld wont cure for days if u leave it in your below freezing garage.

How are you going to attach the fender skins? Just run some tube from the firewall to the grill ? What about your hood, are you planning on lowering it while your at it, taper it so it slopes forward ?

And on the bed, why not taper it and keep the bedsides ?

im too tired to describe how im mounting my fenders right now,

yes i am lowering the front of the hood down about 5" below stock, plus cutting somewhere between 6 and 10 inches off the length of it. that is my single biggest complaint about this rig, visibility over the hood. i cant wait for this easter. :grinpimp:

and as far as reusing the bed panels, i guess your interweb must not be working right, cause if u saw what my bed sides really look like, u would be asking me why i havent already chopped them off.

Im working on the same stuff on my '85. Since you cut off all the factory fender attachment points (threaded holes etc) and I don't see any hardware sticking out through the completed fender in the newer pics... can you talk a little bit about how you attached the fender to the rest of your rig? Is it just sitting there for mock-up... or are those newer pics the final version?

I wish! I havent' been up to much.. getting ready to swap the 60/14bolt under the Blazer now that my wife has a Burb, and the truck that was going to get those axles is now getting Rockwell's and 46's... but all the parts are in PA until June LOL

so not much. Just piddly prepwork... makes for quicker intstalls though I guess.
