This Cherokee has the 360 with a turbo 400 and the single speed t-case that has an offset rear output. My questions are: What mounting configuration can I expect to find between the tranny and t-case? #2 What transfer cases will swap knowing that these axles are coming out in favor of 3/4 ton axles?

You have a quadratrack tc in the Jeep. The quadratrack tc requires a unique transmission output shaft. You will have to pull apart the th400 and replace the output shaft to use another tc without a bunch of adapters. Once you do that, a 205 or 208 could be used...

It sounds like you have a 70's cherokee. What are you gonna build the rig for? If you only do moderate four wheeling, you can keep those axles cause they are Dana 44's. Just build on them , like gears, lockers, chromy shafts, trusses. The offset isn't gonna hurt anything, just get a CV drive shaft (need one in most cases anyway). They will stand up to allot of abuse. They would take trails like Blanca, Schofield, and the Rubicon easy.Of course, none of this means squat if you wanta go hardcore.:D

yup 70's cherokee. it has the quadratrac, i swaped that out for a dana 20 (needs a tranny output shaft). i then put a bbc in it w/ a th400 & np205.

but they can be made into great wheelers.

Thanks so far guys. I need to clarify the mounting pattern of the t-case. Is it the "round pattern" like most other Jeeps?

No. The mount for the t-case is sorta funky square to the QT. It mounts to the back of the TH400 in a round pattern but to mount any other t-case requires a complete teardown of the tranny to replace the output shaft. I put a 32-spline shaft from a Chevy K30 with a TH400 in mine and, with the right tranny-to-transfer case adapter, put a D300 in my J10.
OR
Find a QT with Low range and swap it in.
OR
Find a later model Waggy with a TF727 auto. You gotta swap out the flexplate and all and remove the pilot bushing from the rear of the motor to mate to your 360 and the a D300 will bolt in. You already have passenger-side drop axle in front so the 300 will work fine there.
Sorry for the long response I just had 4 cups of strong coffee :)

the bolt pattern is referred to as the 'Texas' pattern... Dana 20's QT's and Scout 300's use ther pattern, QT gets a long output shaft, but you can simply add the low range box to the single speed QT... OR, you can make the QT lowrange box into a doubler, if you dont mind finding or making a divorced T-Case...

It sounds like in order to use this at all, I still have to come up with more parts than I have. Oh-well.:shaking:
