: Gears?
canadian4x4er 02-03-2006, 11:48 PM Ok I got a front diff for my truck out of an 85, it is going in an 86. The front axle has 4.375 gears, the rear is 4.10, I can't leave it that way can I? That will cause problems? What should I do? Should I just find some 4.375 for the rear?
Shawnboy 02-04-2006, 09:37 AM Gears hafta match front and rear or you'll do harm to the transfer case, so yes, match them up.
Pazuzu 02-04-2006, 09:58 AM Most people like some info on what your truck is.
However, since I did the research myself, and found out, I'll help you.
You should find 4.10 gears for the front. 4.38 gears are rare and crap. 4.10 gears are common and cheap. You should actually just find an entire 3rd member with 4.10 gears, used it'll run you about $70.

Between this post and the one in the Toy section about your wheel hubs I have my doubts if you have a 85 front axle, or if you do it is a 85 housing only.
Repeating Paz:
Locally a third with 4:10's is around $35-50, buy one.

It is out of an 85. Except the guy I got it from had a few, and may have given my the wrong hubs? maybe those are from his other axles. He does have a 4.10 3rd member also, so I will trade my 4.38 for the 4.10, It is just a piss off because I have already purchaced a rebuild kit from Yukon with all the bearings and stuff and already installed it all... now I have to take it all off and swap in the other ring and pinnion.

I wondered the same thing...4.38 gears, wierd early hubs, sounds like a nasty hybrid that someone threw together and sold to this poor boy as a nice 85 axle. I couldn't tell from the other pics on his CarDomain site though.

Um...just swap the entire 3rd member, no bearings, no gaskets, no nothing. I would just be upset that you have to do that after your nice bright green paint job ;)

Notice the 3 79 date code stamped into your wheel hubs, there is no MAY HAVE.
Why anyone would bother to put a $150+ rebuild kit into a $50 third is something I have a hard time understanding.

Notice the 84 date stamp in the set I am using on my rear axle:
