ive got an 80 blazer that is a straight hunting truck and the trans took a dump on my. I can get it into gear, but it will not shift gears. I am going to get the trans rebuilt and wanted any tips for making it stronger. the truck has a zz4 motor, 14 bolt rear and 36" tires.
thanks

Get the heavy duty clutch plates installed and a shift improver kit. I bought mine rebuilt from a guy who built it for plowing snow. He has over 30 years experience in trans reparair. That is all I know, for sure, what he did to it. I am spinning it with a 454, and I have never had any problems with it. I currently have about 15000 miles on the trans. I'm sure there are alot of other things u can do, and someone else will probably chime in.

get a heavy duty torque converter from a quality rebuilder. just go with a standard stall speed to help with operating temps. do a shift kit and every thing else should be pretty straight forward if your rebuilder knows what he is doing.

deep pan, trans cooler, trans temp gauge. All of this will help keep the temp down and thus extending life. Get Red Eagle clutchs or a big name aftermarket company, TCI, B&M, etc.

everyone has just about covered it unless you wanna spend thousands on it. heat is a tranny's biggest enemy.

the best thing you can do for your auto tranny is run a big fat cooler up front.
