: Serios EJS accident....
Skyetone 03-31-2002, 09:01 PM I hear on the local news about a (looks like) runner going into some major crack!! Like a 20 foot forward incline. The guys got pulled out with a chopper . Anyone know details???
I'll let you know what they say on the news....SCARY!!
Skyetone 03-31-2002, 09:11 PM Holly SHIT!! a 91ish runner was comming down lions back. About half way down I guess the truck (reason unknown) slid off to the left into the rocks and landed NOSE FIRST!! Into the cracks below. They say 50-100 feet of drop. The truck was trashed!! Scary ass pix. I'll see if the local paper throws up pix... People were ok for the most part. Some busted bones, but all ok.
Here's the story:
Moab's spring break turned dangerous for three people in town for the Jeep Safari. They were heading up a steep hill to an area called "Lion's Back" as several other vehicles were trying to come down. Their vehicle slipped off the side, fell 45 feet and then hit a sheer cliff face. It then fell about 15 feet more, and became lodged in a crevice.. One patient was flown to the hospital with serious injuries. The other two were taken by ambulance to the hospital.

MoonDog 03-31-2002, 10:06 PM I believe I saw something similar on a "realTV" type show where a bronco lost it's brakes a ways up and just before it got to the bottom of the lions back it took a nosedive off to the left, (right if you're the driver) I believe the people lived but DAMN my neck hurt just watching it.:(
Toy 4Runner Man 03-31-2002, 10:06 PM which media player do they use. The one that I ended up getting linked through wants $9.99 a month to use! Please help!

That's to "upgrade" as they call it, just decline and it should play anyway. It also tries to make you think you have to enter an email address, just click "remind me later" (haha) or enter a bogus address. Man, what some sites do for money.

Yeah, I was down there in '91 when it happened. The guy took his Blazer up, then let his totally unexperienced girlfriend bring it down. The brakes failed about half way down. A contributing factor may have been the fact that it had an auto tranny and she was riding the brakes all the way down. They may have been crap to start with. She did a decent job of keeping it on the fin as it rolled down though.

anyone got the ability to convert the video to a windows media file or something playable with win media player....I refuse to put anything "real" on my computer...
oh yeah, I'm glad no one was hurt...
also in CA uphill traffic has the right of way, is that the same in Utah, or does it not apply in this case since it was private property??
:usa:
offroadr35 04-01-2002, 07:28 AM the video doens't really show much. it is basically just of the news guy saying exactly what is written.
i bet that was a fun ride :D
McSoo 04-01-2002, 08:51 AM I've never been to Lions Back, so this was interesting to me... The way these people fell, it looks like they dropped 60 feet off the side? Wouldn't this be like dropping a truck from 60 feet in the air on it's roof? How do you survive something like that? Or did they not fall directly to the landing point?
As to the afore-mentioned wreck w/a full size Blazer (in '91 I guess), the report I saw said the master cylinder failed. Nonetheless, the inexperience of the person driving was plenty apparent. The way the truck picked up speed it was clearly not in low range, unless perhaps it was an auto and died. Even then, how about a parking brake folks? Bottom line, there's at least 5 things that could have been done to avoid or minimize this accident - it doesn't show that 'wheeling is unsafe, it just shows that people are stupid.
Brian Ellinger 04-01-2002, 09:54 AM According to one guy I met who watched it (we were camping at Lions back Campground that night) they were heading up, an 2 rigs started down. NOT what you are supposed to do. They got a little off to the side, and couldnt get it back to center. One of the 4 bailed out as it was starting, and tried holding the front bumper down, and just couldnt do it. The other 3 rolled part way down, then fell off and got jammed nose first inbetween 2 "fins". You couldnt see it unless you walked right up to it. Which I did not, as search and rescue needs to be able to do their job. They were all 3 air lifted out, one by one. All 3 were concious at the time someone got to them. The first was in bad shape, the other 2 not as bad. I dont kknow details of their conditions, as we left Sunday morning, and didnt think to get a paper.
What could you do if you were part of the way up Lion's Back, I wouldn't want to back down either!

offroadr35 04-01-2002, 04:17 PM details...

aaronlosey 04-01-2002, 05:42 PM man, these people were trying to win themselves a darwin award and someone had to go and rescue them.
TheBigSgt 04-05-2002, 09:40 PM Well, It was a interesting Sat at the Lions Back. The Club I was with was coming off Hell's Revenge when we saw the rescue crews going up. I told the Skinny Allen to get me up the and Bob Followed me. I am a disabled Firefighter and Bob was a AF nurse, We're both highly trained. By the time we got up there, there was too many people there so we help the Rangers keep the road clear for rescue equipment to get in. We couldn't go anywhere because the road below was being used as a helopad. While we where there I was talking with some folk and this lady told me her and her husbad had filmed it happening. I asked if I could see her film and she said her bat. has dead. We happened to have the same machine and used ours to look at it. This is what we saw.
The Toy was going up, Jamie is a guy, and he saw the other 2 coming down. there was also a vehical infront of him going up. the 2 coming down stoped. The first one going up went right around them. Jamie stopped right before the little ledge up there. When he started to go he couldn't get over the ledge. Evertime he tried he would bouce to the right. The guy you see standing there got out, I'll asume to spot him. He hit it a few more times, boucing even more to the right finally going into the roll you see there. I the tape there are about 2 seconds before you hear the boom of them hitting the ledge they landed on. As for the guy standing there, he most likely was in shock. The roll started and went quick. About a second after what you see, he started running to get to them.
Jamie was wrong for doing it and not backing off, but NOBODY deserves it in any shape or form. You are very wrong on that. Theirs not a wheeler on here that at one time or another hasn't thought " How'd I do that" Stuff happens and that's it.
Grant County Search & Rescue did a great job and I'm glad their on the job down there. The Chopper pilot did a great job of lowering the Rescue team and the Stokes in and out of that crevise that they fell into.
This was the wildest Safari I've been to so far.
Bill Collins 04-05-2002, 10:01 PM damn,i hope they are gonna be alright.maybe it was that good toyota quality that save there life...
