: Draglink hitting & bashing shock!
MoonDog 03-31-2002, 10:30 PM First off it's an 84, with bout 4" of lift from lift springs and extended shackles, and a dropped draglink. And yes I searched and turned up some information, but nothing that gave me any insight into why this has happened.
When the front suspension flexes down on the drivers side the shock leans into the draglink, and the draglink has put a decent dent in the side of the shock. I believe the shock mounts are stock, so what the hell? The Ubolts have been flipped, and I know this can interfere with the draglink, but the two seem to clear each other and get along just fine. Could the J-arm be bent causing it to be closer to the shock... if so whats a good way to measure the dimensions of the J-arm? ...Bent draglink? any ideas?
hmmm if nothing else I guess I'll just have to make some new taller shock towers that lean out a little more, but I'd really like to find out why this is happening.

my 85 runner does the same, only real difference in our vehicles is that i don't have a u-bolt flip. my shock is also dented from the drag-link. not sure what it is, but i'm sure the cross-over i'm getting soon will cure it.:D :D :D
crash 03-31-2002, 10:38 PM BAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA!!!!
Time to do x-over dudes!!!
There is now way to stop this from happening with push/pull, you just plain overflex that steering sys....
Been there, done that...
Not to mention that you need to spray some degreaser on that shit! Looks like yur engine threw up all over your suspenion!
OOP'S 04-01-2002, 07:54 AM The reason for it is the supension is cycleing more then it was designed for. Cure x-over steering or a limiting strap.

It just makes the bolts easier to remove :D
the shock is clearanced now!:D May as well run it that way untill
you get a crossover setup. That is a double tube shock. the dented part is just the ourter resivoir. if it still fully compresses, the shock is o.k. its either that, or relocate the shock.

Shaker 04-01-2002, 10:44 AM 2nd that on the "Truck threw up" dirty is dirty but DAMN!!! Start saving your $$$ for X-over cause eventually the J-arm will "snap". Start getting your parts.....Don't prolong the only fix......  :p

'Round here that's called EARP (Engine Applied Rust Proofing)!:D
flimmy 04-01-2002, 02:54 PM Flip the shock upside down. And check to see if the drag link hits it then. Is the drag link bent upwards to clear the u bolts ? I didn't think you could do a u bolt flip with the stock steering.
Satan's_Minion 04-01-2002, 07:02 PM The ball on the J arm is flipped, thats how he can run the u-bolt like that. Also the reason it hits the shock....

so when I get the oil leak fixed I'll have also fixed the too much flex problem? awright! uh oh but might the dealer charge me double if it's two fixes in one? :p :flipoff2:
Grrr, well I'll see if the draglink will clear the shock if I mount it upside down, the shocks do need to be replaced and I'd like to do so with monotubes so it may work till I scrounge up some $$$ for X-over. ...if not X-over just moved from #2 to #1 on my truck to-do list.
(and yes, I carry a spare J-arm)
crash 04-01-2002, 11:06 PM One other thing to carry as a spare, since the springs are so flexy with a push/pull steering, there is a ton of forch aplied to the driver side center pin, carrry a spare one, 2 times now we had to replace one on the trail.
Wheelie_Pete 04-01-2002, 11:09 PM And trim those damn u-bolts off.

MoonDog 04-02-2002, 10:58 PM I wasnt the one who installed the Ubolt flip, and I do plan to trim them.
