Friday night I got started a little early on the burnt wiring, worked till about 10:00 Friday night.
Saturday, I did some stuff around the house, finished our taxes (getting 2600.00 back!), measured and worked on plans for a RV gate, and general back yard remodeling. Worked on the Scout wiring a little more.
Sunday, I rested.

I broke both my wrists in a horrible mountain biking accident (endo'd going down hill) a couple years ago, and was in casts for two months. I know how it feels to not be able to type, but that was the last of my worries:laughing:

Drove scout about +/-200miles round trip on fwy to go wheeling with friends. Damn USFS had area closed to everybody except fu**ing snowmobiles! Had to find another area to go play in the snow. Wasted around $90 in gas just for that one day trip! I'll need to take a loan out, just to pay off those damn gas stations if I keep driving the scout that far.

Sat.- finished up the power steering, borgeson swap. tested it, and no leaks with my custom-cheap made hose:cool2: had to combine a 1980 hose with a other year hose, because of the dumbass metric fitting on the 1980 box. owell, only took me 10 minutes and $3 in parts:D
now to figure out whether i can get my main spring straightened, then i get to drive it. should be like a whole new truck with steering that actually responds:D

I bought a new toolbox. My old shop roll-around has gotten too small. That was fun. Should be here in a week.
Other than that, I didn't do much but wait on the wife, who has pneumonia... :(

Pulled plugs on yellow pick up, but wind was kickin' all day and ears started to get sore. Moving the Scout II's back out here to my garages and electrical stuff to a storage unit in the next town over. Want to be able to spend more time wrenchin' at night. Parts for the 5.0 swap are in and the only thing left is the LUK clutch. Might be next winters project. :smokin:

Mailed off my taxes.... getting a whopping $144 back.:flipoff2:
Sat. I took a drive out in the country to let Buddy run around in the conservation area and chase various critters. I planned the route to take me by one of my future projects to see if it was still sitting there. Yup, still there... hasn't moved since I last went by it 2.5 years ago.

As best as I've been able to determine through posting on another board (I know exactly jack about the old big IHC trucks) it's an R series 185 or higher, maybe a 195, OTR sleeper cab tractor. Need it like I need another hole in my head......:shaking:
Oh yeah.... also passed out cookies and bottles to newbs and whiners.:flipoff2:

Saturday...
Got the rest of my Poly Performance stuff last week.. this one from RedArt
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/PlainGallery/2006DevilWinterOverHaul/DCP_0002.sized.jpg
Pulled the radiator out of the Scout..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/PlainGallery/2006DevilWinterOverHaul/DCP_0005_001.sized.jpg
Then pulled the chassis out of the Scout.. or the body off..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/PlainGallery/2006DevilWinterOverHaul/DCP_0008.sized.jpg
All because of this.
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/PlainGallery/2006DevilWinterOverHaul/DCP_0007.jpg
Which looked like this after the torch and grinder..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/PlainGallery/2006DevilWinterOverHaul/DCP_0014.sized.jpg
I'm going to plate over the hole, then build a new body mount from plate, and strap it over the top of the frame for good measure.
Still need to fix this...
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/PlainGallery/2006DevilWinterOverHaul/DCP_0018.sized.jpg
Notice the oil pan angle?
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/PlainGallery/2006DevilWinterOverHaul/DCP_0020.sized.jpg
I think I'll cut the other body mount off and plate/fab it the same, and both motor mounts are coming out and I'm going to raise the engine 1", putting the mount plate flush with the top of the frame to give me a little more clearance for the driveshaft..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/PlainGallery/2006DevilWinterOverHaul/DCP_0016.sized.jpg
May still wind up cutting the front spring hangers off and building short fangs - drop it enough to remove the 6-deg shims from the spring perches AND hopefully gain some up-travel from at-rest. I might manage to pull off 6" of up-travel at the moment.. but the air-bumps are 3" stroke units.
Better than the 3.5" I thought I had.. all of which assumes jacking the engine up an inch will help keep the driveshaft out of the 727 pan..
Also built some more on the F250 bar..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/PlainGallery/2006ChrisLampingRollbar/DCP_0017.sized.jpg
Got the diagonals/angles in from the "bed bar" down to the uprights at the frame rail.
Needs an upright in the middle of the B hoop, above the current upright. We'll lay it over at a ~75deg angle like the outer portion of the hoop is, for aesthetic reasons. It'll still help transfer any impact more or less straight down to the frame rail.
---
Sunday I got "the call" and went out to drag a buddy's rigs out of the mountains.. got one stuck, walked home and got another, got it stuck, walked home, and then managed to get a third rig stuck. Two K5s and a Dodge pickup. Chains on all three of 'em.
One was stuck on this side of the mountain, one on the top, and one at the bottom on the other side..
The new winch got a work out, but only got 2 rigs out. The third (at the very top) had a dead battery, and it was getting dark. Drove past the rig at the top twice, though... right over the big drift it was behind. ;)
I do like my trail Scout. Even though the doors don't close or seal up, there are holes in the cargo area, it gets 5mpg, it bounces down the road.. it sure is capable.. especially at ~6psi in the Swampers (just don't winch yourself sideways - has a tendency to peel the beads.. d'oh)
Oh.. and I managed to get home in time to watch the second half of the Super Bowl and watch my Stillers win their thumb ring.
If only I had some Iron City it might be a drinking occasion.
I guess this could make up for Mario retiring.. almost..

Upper bag mount
http://www.thisdysfunctional.org/~jduarte/ca-project/4link-43.jpg
Remaining on the list
* Install the rear axle
* Mount the upper shock mount once the axle is in place.
* Fab adjustable bump stop mounts
* Run new rear brake lines
* Mount the rear calipers
* Reinstall the mufflers and have a shop finish the exhaust from the mufflers back
* Screw around with the front shackles, bump stops, and shocks.
I can almost smell the finish line.

I can just hear it... honEY! :flipoff2:
jdjanda... that truss looks like it needs some bracing?? Is there something tieing it into the diff housing I'm not seeing? Is that new or the same one you ran before? Bag mounts look good.
Tom, you missed the first half, but can you really call that a Steelers "victory"?? Not saying the Hawks DID win... but they sure had things other than themselves working against them. They messed up here and there, but I feel they were a better team and played better than the Steelers, but they DEFINATLY weren't the favorite, and it showed. I don't mind that they lost, there is always a winner and a looser, but don't like the WAY they "lost" that one.
I finished drywall and texured two bedrooms. Pretty good concidering we had no power for most of Saturday  Even started painting Sunday morning till I ran out of paint... then just blew the rest of the weekend off (sat a watched a dissapointing Superbowl with the Mrs.). Did do a little IH wrenching though. Finnaly got the wheel hubs/drums off the front of the KB. Pads were good, but there is enough grease and gunk in there, and the drums are a little groved that I think I'm going to rebuild (as budget permits) it all as much as I can. Also fount the passenger side lower King Pin is really sloppy... Looks like I'm stripping both sides down to atleast the spindle and seeing about rebuilding them. Atleast everything will be nice and clean and painted when I'm done :D

Friday: Finally went you with a girl, my buddy had been trying to get me with for about a month. We had one hell of a good time, just sitting around talking at dinner. Unfortunatly she has been sick all week, so it was just dinner. I can't wait to see her again.
Saturday: Great Western Binder Bee meeting in the morning. The meeting went really well, people stepping up to fill needed postitions and things getting accomplished. Then my Dad and I headed out to the coast to pick up his new trailer.
Sunday. Slept late, worked on my pickup and got interruppted by just about everything possible, so I didn't get much done. My neighbor came by with his race car, as I hadn't seen it yet and he is planning on swapping the engine. We were going to take a hot lap around the neighborhood, but I had to leave to go look at a dump truck:( . The dumper was nice and recommended a selling price to the guy. Then out to a friends property to help him burn a mobile home he pushed down, then back into town for my Uncle's Birthday. Basically really busy all day with not much getting done.
Here a pic of the trailer, it's a 10K 18'x7' and pretty much all the bells and whistles. We're really happy with it, tows okay, but it is a really stiff trailer and you feel everything when it's empty being towed by and empty truck!

I have been buying some Grizzly tools of late, and they had a screamin' deal on thier biggest tool box setup. I can get it, with shipping for just under $750.00. I will keep my Kennedy, but use it for my machine tools and expensive stuff. The Grizzly box I am gonna use for all the standard things.
Tool box quality is all about the same anymore, and I can't see me throwing down the $$$ for a MAC or a Snap-On of the same size when the quality isn't any better. Where I work, a guy just bought a new Kennedy, and I have seen better quality at HF. Really. It is kinda sad. :(

I'm nearing the "start a new one" point. But I just rebodied and painted it less than a year ago.. I just haven't decided which parts Scout will get the honor of becoming my next race rig.
I need to campaign this chassis at least one more year. But this will likely be a slow race year, but mebbe pretty busy family wise.. so I'll either have a lot of time to get started on the next chassis, or none. :D
I'm getting fairly proficient with the bender and band-saw-notcher, got the new welder.. local steel supplier is actually ordering tube for us..
Shopping for some coil overs and more air-bumps.
Likely start with a bare frame, plate the weak spots I've found, and build the links.. hang skins off the cage..
Then when that little task is over, it might be time to overhaul the trail rig in a similar fashion. :D
--
Oh, and Joe, my thoughts were similar to Mark's - the axle truss looks a little under-whelming..

Damm, guys relax on the truss, it's .250 wall, full pen welds and will be tied into the diff cover before it's wheeled hard. I need to get this thing on all four wheels and the diff cover is going to take a lot of time to get it to come out the way I want.
Tom it's time to tie the cage into the frame, your frame will thank you for it and you might find the front end works better without all the frame flex.

Nice trailer:cool2: is it a tilt? Mine ran stiff too, I pulled the bottom leaf (was a six pack) and it rides a lot better now when empty. I figured once the packs are broke in I could replace it, its been a couple years now and everything is working fine, so the extra leafs are still in the garage.
Got my rims from 66cjdean, got them painted and mounted.

No, Dad and I aren't the biggest fans of tilt bed trailers, too much trouble if you ask me. The ramps are 6' long, so we'll get a nice long incline to drive an low riders up on :flipoff2:! I came up with a great idea for a winch mount, so I guess we need to start looking for a winch. The biggest problem is the ground is so saturated we can't spread the 13 yards of gravel we have. We had planned on parking it on that gravel, but we'll have to wait for it to dry out.

L series were earlier and had 7 grill dividers, R's only had 3. Other then that there is very little exterior body changes from 53-74, when they ended production. There were a hell of alot of interations of the same truck, cab overs, forward controls, buses, the diesel series, the v-series (V configuation motors, where the R's had inlines), and the list goes on. It all get's really confusing.

I was kinda hoping to hear "Yeah, that's held up for three years of abuse".. which means a big heavy truss isn't needed. :D

Well, the cabs (or at least the external features) didn't change much for many years. If it is an R (as the grille suggests), then it is a '53 or '54 since it has two small rear windows. One large rear window indicates '55+. Of course it could be a pre '53 L series with an R series grille on it.

Friday: prepped and shot primer on the new bumper for the trail scout, took alot of primer due to the sand blasting. Fixed the left rear turn signal on the toyota-rusted out bad, had to fabricate it to get by. Put some 4" pioneers in the dash of the toyota also. Did some measuring on the trail scout for some new spring shackles for the trail scout also. to fix the ones I bent 2 years ago.
Saturday: painted the trail scout bumper with hammer paint. cleaned the engine bay on the toyota. went to offroad clubs events scheduling party. drank way to much
Sunday: layed around and suffered.

Well wouldn't that make the one in Binderman's link an R-185 then? It only has 3 vertical grill bars, but he states it's an L-185.
One look at the dataplate would clear all this up.

Back from school for the weekend, decided to get the traveler going, had fun at choke cherry for a couple hours, damn i miss that thing, can't wait to get out of school. I think I'm going to bob the rear so that a Scout II top fits on it, that could be cool.

I can't be for sure of the letter series, but will ask my Pops to look on the title and see.
I do know that other than being wider the cab on it and my L110 are identical. Anyone ever narrowed a complete cab??? More dreams......
R,L,,,,220,221,,,whatever it takes!
:D
Now I'm not one to get my undies in a bunch when people start carving up their rigs to make trail rigs and clear larger meats, etc. Face it, while there aren't making Scouts anymore.... there are still quite few of them around. Seeing as your sleeper cab is one of, as you put it, "only 3 that I know of", it doesn't make any sense to me to cut it up.

Now that's a good idea!!!
Remove the added 18" off the back end!!!
Of course coils would be needed then....

thats the plan dude i think it may end up looking kinda like a jeep comp cut, but if I take my time and think ahead It could look good. It would be sweet I'd have scout II interior room for gear, and a traveler wheelbase, with a sealed full top and better departure angles

Spent another day cleaning out the shop - almost done.
Took all day to get my tractor started. Damn starter solenoid and battery both crapped out. Also changed out all three battery cables. It would finally turn over but not start. One long trip to the nearest convenience store for some ether and she fired right up. Got the post hole digger on and ready to start making fence - as soon as we get some rain - we've had less than 2 inches since October.

Its 100% that its a L series as the fender, dataplate and title agree with each other.
It may be a Johnny Cash rig.:D

I wouldnt hack it up for just the cab. I have a couple extra cabs and doors for my 110 if I ever have time for a extended or 4 door project someday. Wish I had window glass for the sleeper as it might motivate me a little because it needs to be in the "dry" before it goes downhill.
Guess I can stay busy IF I am ever able to retire. If the state doesnt quite raising the age+years worked total I will be 100+ before it happens.:D

Well you'd have to either buy another windsheild or rig something up to cover that opening. Since all the other windows are flat, you could cut some plexiglass and silicone it in the opening for now to keep the weather out. A few 4x4's and some corrigated tin roofing and make a little carport to store it under. You could even put some of the tin roofing around the upper portion of the sides of the structure to keep the rain from blowing in under the roof.

Or he could just ship it up to me and I'll put it to good use....
I envision that thing on a late-model "loadstar" chassis with a modern diesel, and a 12-11 foot flatbed on the back and a 15T pintle hitch and a 30' flat deck trailer..... :D :D
I want one now!

I finally got back from my vacation. I had a great time but must say that airlines(Virgin Atlantic and British Airways in particular) can kiss my hairy ass! Both going and coming I never made it to my final destination. Nothing like getting dropped off in Beirut, Lebanon and then having to make your way over the border by car with a crazed taxi driver doing max speed over a summit dumping snow. Then on my way home I got rerouted to LAX instead of San Francisco. Had to rent a car and drive 500 miles to get back home. But I and my family are home safe and sound. Now back to the grind as I'm now 3 weeks behind in my work and have a pile of mail to sort thru.

Hauling my Scout to the trail head. And up to 2 buddy's rigs (with the trailer set-up) to farther off wheeling trips. JV and Moab would be allot closer splitting the gas 3 ways...
Also hauling my "collection" to shows and such.
Plus if I get a stouter trailer I could use it to haul the back-hoe around... finnaly get the little bulldozer I've wanted..... :D But like you, I need a new project (right now) like I need a hole in the head. Maybe in a couple years. Right now I need to get my KB back up and usable, and get the t-lette finnaly up to tow rig status so I can quick borrowing my Father-In-Laws truck or stealing trucks from work.

Now that would be sharp. I was looking at the picture over the last few days and trying to think of a good idea....yours is it.:smokin:

My thought would be to fabricate a steel bed for it along the lines of a bed from that period. Maybe even cut, stretch, widen, etc an bed from that period and mount it up. Kind of like and old timer CXT.

I already have a CTD tow rig.... much more modern, more comfortable and plenty capable of towing my GN. Not sure I'd be happy with a 5.9L Cummins in a truck that big.... needs more like a 8.3L Cummins. Saw a new 8.3 listed on ebay for $17,000.00

Retro would be cool.
DT466E, whatever transmission you like, and lots of sound deadener. Modern tires, and the brakes that it has would be good as long as everything was replaced or rebuilt. Should have air brakes. Cummins 200 would be nice throwback to the old days, but still give good power and speed.
Rechrome the OEM parts, repaint it a nice color, and drive it anywhere with a nice trailer haulin' whatever. I think Farmall tractors on the trailer would look :cool2:

IF I end up getting this thing and do anything with it, I would try to preserve the outward appearance as much as possible, I don't have any problems with updating the drivetrain and running gear to modern equipment.
OK, enough of this. What started out as a mention of what I saw this weekend has turned into a thread that diverged about as much as possilbe from the subject of extreme wheelin' tech, so I'm done with the subject (on this board at least).
