Does anyone tow a heavier load with a shackle flip? How are the characteristics and are there any negatives over stock setup?I want to add a little lift without blocks and thought it might be a good alternative to spending a pile on springs. My trailer is a heavy 28ft travel trailer with a GVW of 10,000 pounds although loaded it weighs around 8500lbs.The trailer is a high unit with my w/d shank turned upside down to get the ball height right.I thought a 4 inch lift and some meatier tires might be nice.Anybodies experiences would be appreciated.

This same question has been asked a zillion times in the ORD forum at CK5, the answer from Stephen is always that you can tow and haul the same weight with a shackle flip. Try searching over there for more info, so you can make an informed decision.....

You can also read about the people on that same forum that towed with a flip and had some bad experiences with it..
IMO a 28 ft trailer is way to much weight to tow with a flip.. If you were talking about a utlity trailer with a 4 wheeler then maybe but not something that heavy..

a shackle flip changes ur suspension geometry. this is just a cheap easy way to get some lift and extra flex out of a leaf sprung suspension. If your shackle is in the stock location and u stomp on the gas with a heavy load the axle wants to wrap back pushing up on the rear of the leaf spring up, but since the spring is already above the shackle the spring isnt going to move. Now if u move the leaf spring under the shackle and stomp on the gas with a heavy load the spring can moves back and up word with ease causeing axle wrap and some major ass sagging.
Thanks for the help guys.Don't want to find any surprises so maybe I'll just go for a standard lift and be done with it.

I don't really agree with your statement. If the spring wants to move, it will move......no matter where the mounting point is. In general it seems like any towing issues are more related to comparing the stock height suspension and tires to the lifted suspension and bigger tires.

Under axle wrap ... on the rear axle ... when powering forward the shackle end of the leafspring wants to move up...so your theory is wrong.
By the way dodge one tons use a compression shackle in the rear.

its not a cheap fix, but a set of trac bars will fix this. I don't know how track bars will act with almost 4.5 tons of weight on the ass end of a rig, I have only seen utility trailers with two quads towed on a rig with track bars and that worked just fine.

Axlewrap is when the axle tries to make your springs look like an "S". Under heavy forward throttle, the axle tries to move the chassis end of the spring up and towards the back of the vehicle, while at the same time tries to move the shackle end of the springs down and toward the front of the vehicle.
You are correct in that it would cause some sagging.

mickyThanks anyway on that idea but no thanks. In one of my other rigs I crushed a set under heavy throttle.I'm sure my 350 won't have that jam but none the less been there done that and didn't like the consequenses.
