Need input on engine rebuilt kit quailty.
Have a 22re and 22r that are both in the process of being rebuilt. Now I need to order rebuild kits. Would like to go with DOA or LC, but do not have that much $. Will use DOA guides however. :D
Did a search (yes a newbie that use the search button) and found good comments on enginebuilder.com and Northern Auto.

Checked out enginebuilder.com out and the price is fair. But the 'product' name is EPN and Rock - rock pistons, rock timing, etc. Never heard of this brand before. Any one used the engine rebuild kits? What is the quality like:question:

Northern Auto Parts has a Sealed Power kit for about $350. Comes with everything including a cam. But they list the same cam for EFI and carb. Any one use this kit and the cam

Last thing I want to do is spend $$ on machine work only to get junk parts that do not last.
:

Someone please chime in on this. I am in the same situation and need to know what is good and what isnt. I will use DOA guides and a turbo oil pump, but the rest doesnt need to be top shelf stuff for a stock motor.

I just did a rebuild, here's what I did.............for starters I did not use an all in one rebuild kit. By a gaskit kit from a major maker (fel pro, etc). Parts like the oil pump, water pump, tc kit will range wildly. Just make sure you by *Japanese* stuff to get the best quality. There are lots of manufacture's in Japan that supply parts to Toyota, these won't have the toyota logo on them if the are sold staight from them.........but they are of toyota quality if they are a toyota supplier. Use the DOA guides, they are too expensive but there is no alternative. The Enginebuilder kit has only one rail that is metal, the other is still plastic. Same goes for the rings or pistons, by quality stuff. Personally I think an all inclusive kit will have one of two problems. 1: too expensive or 2: some parts suck while others are ok.

Since this was an older post, here is an update.
Ordered the engbldr.com kit - pistons, moly rings, bearings, gaskets, timing set w/ single steel rail, bronze guides, RV cam, oil pump, etc. The block / crank / head are all the machince shop (SOL) and should be back mid week.
All the parts look first rate. My machinist was impressed with the pistons- all 4 mic-ed out perfectly to spec. Did have a piston issue - the block would not clean up at +.020 so had to go +.040. Ted @ engbldr was very cool, just paid the shipping and he did an exchange. He was also very helpful regarding the rocker arm question w/new cam (FYI - okay to reuse if in good conditoin). For Customer Service they get an A+.
Once everything is back and built, I will give a report and maybe a write up their parts. :D

there is another steel backed 22r single timing chainm out there....search on Ebay it's there! P.S. I would go dual chain with the steel guides but swapping in a 75-84 cover & crank gear on the shorter 85 up block....get the cover machined shorter and you are gold.

Just two weeks ago I purchased the engbldr.com kit with the rv head and cam setup. The parts all appear first rate, and the machine work he did was excellent. All at a fair price. I'd post some pics, but I'm in Austin, TX for business and my truck is in Portland, OR. I'll put up pics and performance updates when I get home if you guys want.

I just ordered my kit form him also. He is great, answers all email, has companies researching new ways and products for the 22r. His steel guides I think are great and not overpriced. He also is a active member on other TOyota discussion pages and ALWAYS is there when help is needed.

Got the cam on an ebay auction - good $.
Good luck on the rod bearings. My 22re w/ 203k was deep into the copper on the rods / mains but did not knock. Oil psi was fair.
