: I got a Samurai...
TJpwr 10-20-2001, 11:53 AM I picked up an 87 Sammi that needs a motor for $240. Hole in the block. Did I pay too much? The body is very clean and so is the title. So what to do about the engine? Used? Rebuilt? From where? This is the plan...get it running and then sringover with stock wrangler springs. Hack the body to fit 35's Gears (ratio for 35's?) And weld the rear and lockright up front... What do you think?
bobaki 10-20-2001, 12:22 PM if you feel you paid too much I'll buy it I think your jes funnin us
M.Martian 10-20-2001, 12:33 PM Look into throwing a 1.6 into there. If you can find one, you will be much happier with the power.
If you plan on running 35's, you will want to look into running Toyota axles. Especially if you are locking both front and rear you will start busting stuff.
On a side note about the YJ springs. If possible try and get 5 leaf packs for both the front and the rear. The 4 leaf packs in the rear are very soft and axle wrap will be a problem (especially spring over).
CragRat 10-20-2001, 12:50 PM Look into getting one of those "take-uot" motors from Japan. Should be a local guy selling them.
bobaki 10-21-2001, 10:43 AM a take out 1.6 you won't regret going 1.6
zuk88 10-21-2001, 11:11 AM seems to me a lot of Jeepers and Toy drivers are buyin' Zuks......and I thought we zukers only wheeled the web????
TJpwr 10-22-2001, 07:18 PM Here is a pic of the little beauty...

So now I'm thinking I should just buy a rolled Toy and take all the running gear. Would be way stronger and I should just do it right first...

There you go! Run the whole toy drivetrain, using 4.7:1 Tcase gears and 5.29s, you'll be at 98:1, and it will most likely TRUCK down the highway, as well.
Go find a wrecked 85 Toyota. You want something before 86 (after 85, all US-market P/Us and 4Runners got IFS) and you want the 84 or 85 because they have EFI - which is good for "inverted wheeling" and an extra 20 HP.
The toy engine would make 120-130HP, and 140-150 in the torque department. If you extend your wheelbase a little (AFAIK, the rear driveshaft would be too short otherwise) you can go with a double case setup, netting you either 108:1 or 228:1 (with one 4.7 gearset) with 5.29s.
Plus the Toy engines run at least as long as Sammy engines do, with 2-300K miles being not uncommom.
UZI 9mm 10-24-2001, 02:31 PM a little tip i stole from masteryota-don't forget to take out the original engine first, before putting the new one in.oh wait.that's just if you replace pinion bearings.never mind....
bobaki 10-24-2001, 02:52 PM or greese it good and it 'll slide right in

Unless I'm mistaken, 84's did not have EFI as an option. Also not all 85's have EFI. I've seen some without it.

killingthemonkey 10-25-2001, 06:06 AM Actually, I'm looking to put a Vortec V6 into mine. there is a junkyard here in town that sells engines for $150.00. Of course, I'm gonna have to rebuild it. There is a company that sells the conversion kit to fit these engines. I'll post the URL as soon as I get it from my buddy.
Give you $300 for it.
TJpwr 10-25-2001, 03:11 PM I've heard of two places in the Fremont area (I think) that sell motors. Atalco???? and Shingwa??? I'm retarded and did not write them down but I think that's right. Anyone know for sure??? I was told the first one sold longblocks for $500. Sounds good unless I can get a Yoter for less or close. I would like to do the Toy swap but I think it will be too much $$$.
86Project 10-27-2001, 10:44 PM Both 84's and 85's had efi as an option, they are sometime's hard to find 84's harder than the 85's though. By the way what do you guys think of the Grand Viagra? My wife really likes them and I'm thinking of getting her one?
