HI,
Today is Easter Sunday, for almost all religions a time of new beginnings. Since mankind walked on earth, no matter what their beliefs, spring has been the symbol of renewal as the last of winter's grip wanes and nature sprouts new life. We too need to "sprout new life" as we rededicate ourselves to left over challenges from last year and "girding our loins" for challenges unseen.
Part of our left over challenge starts 4/01/02 tomorrow "April Fools Day". The first of the Wayne working meetings to decide what are the recreational opportunities the public wants. You have an E-mail copy of the dates and places; did you decide which one to go to? Have you called your friends to go with you? Have you planed what you want to say? Do not make the mistake of telling yourself "I am planning to go", if you haven't picked the date and place yet then you are really planning not to go. Check the list at the bottom and make your plans. Make sure you call your friends in Kentucky and West Virginia! They will not know unless you tell them about it.
Wellsville is an old challenge that has taken a lot of time and it does not look good. Lots of folks would like to go there, ride their equipment, pick up trash, do what is asked, and even pay money! The problem is picking up trash is not the solution to keeping the area open. I have been told by the president of Western Reserve 4x4 that;
the staging area has an A B rode going through it however the land owned on each side is owned by Amos Rawsom who wants to close it. Amos is working with the police to close it. AMOS states that anyone doing a clean up or is caught on his property will be arrested and Amos has given Craig Roberts permission to impound cars/trucks/ATV's etc.. Roberts stated that if he has to deal with people there he hopes we bring NEW cars/trucks/ATV's so he can destroy them and impound them. Craig not only works for Warren but also for Amos. Amos, Iddings own most of the land that we call yellow creek. Some sections are state owned and there is about 7 main owners with about 50 other owners in the area.
Wellsville is on patrol as of APRIL 1 For AMOS to close the area that he owns. Amos will not allow anyone on his property.
I stopped at abdulla's bar to talk to him but he was not there since he is the next main owner. I am sending someone there sat night to talk to him since he is a main owner.
The city of wellsville is closing the main entrance.
The city of wellsville, Amos, Roberts, and Springer are all working together to keep the area closed.
Roberts does the city of wellsville favors is what locals told me. The city of wellsville talked highly of Roberts while I spoke to them. As if he was a good man and doing the city a favor by helping to keep people out.
I have a flyer from Warren about his campground that was put on the president of the ground pounders home door about his new campground. However Warren can not give us permission to use the land in yellow creek for he only owns 10 acres. His campground will be set up like tri counties campground, with a mud pit hill climb.
Roberts knows about us looking up info the clean up on may 11 ( not sure who started that date ) and the clean up on April 14. He says he will have us arrested. Amos states he has given Roberts permission and the city of wellsville knows roberts has amos' permission to impound any cars/trucks/ATV's on his property which includes parking at the staging area.
Our challenge now is to get home addresses of the property owners to talk directly to them. Do you live anywhere near the area? Would you like to be a leader? Jefferson County is not on the Internet the way Hocking and other counties are. To get the information you almost have to be there. I will write the letters and do the follow up phone calls if someone gets the information I need. I will send you all I have on the place if you are willing to help. It isn't as much fun as picking up trash and hauling out old cars (I know really big fun) but it is the most important project today!
This Saturday April 6 is the roadside clean up at Zaleski Forest. If you or your group would like to make some points in Vinton County this would be good start. My club always turns out to help. We start at 9 AM, finish around noon. They provide trash bags, gloves, the back roads to pick up litter (I have never seen so many empty bud light bottles) and a lunch when we are done. You are on your way home at 1 PM. Of course if you wanted to you would be close to do some riding after lunch. Numerous Vinton county organizations show up for this workday, lots of kids and adults. Call me to help on a clean up that will not get you thrown in jail! (They even have door prizes and a free T-shirt!!!)
We will post club meeting notices and special announcements on the OMTA site for member clubs who do not have their own site or would just like to get the word out. If you would like me to talk to your club about OMTA let me know.
April 24 the OEC (Ohio Environmental Congress) will have their annual lobby day at the state house. I will be going; the club I belong to is a member, to spread the word of responsible recreation. I am not asking anyone else to join or go but our challenge is to put our own "lobby day" together.
Are we too poor or are we too cheap?
Personal Activism has the highest price tag of anything we can do. The cost of personal activism is more then just paying some money. The cost is money and time with time being absolutely priceless! We all know that no amount of money can buy you one minute more, if it could the rich would live forever. The opportunity to lobby our representatives is our constitutional right but it requires time to do it. You cannot call in a personal visit, it cannot be reproduced for 3 cents a copy and no one can do it for you. When your family requires all your time you have no choice. Some are actually time poor, yet scrimp to make ends meet. Others have the time but would rather spend money on a new toy then spend time on keeping their access. Your personal quandary for today, am I poor or just too damn cheap?
The April meeting has narrowed to two dates, either the 20th or 27th. I need a head count of members who would like to attend to insure a place small enough to look crowded.
Remember Representative Ted Strickland will be at the April 3rd meeting. If you live in that area he is running to be your new Representative. He has been a friend on motorized recreation in the past, go there and keep him on our path.
