Looking at either the Rough Country or Rusty`s 6.5" lift, and want to order tonight. But,is a SYE absolutely neccessary for a vehicle that will be mostly used for driving to and from work, with the occasional off-road trail, most of which are mostly mud? I don`t wanna drop a grand on a lift if I have to spend another $500 on extra stuff.

Yuppers, and get a CV rear driveshaft and rotate the rear pinion up to the proper angle.
If you don't, you'll be eating rear driveshaft u-joints on a regular basis.

I suspect with your post this is gonna be a mallcrawler and not a wheeled Jeep, but either way you will need a SYE. Anything over 4" needs a SYE just to get rid of the driveline vibes. Anything that is going to be wheeled regardless of the lift needs a SYE to get rid of the weak output shaft on NP231s, assuming that is the T-case you have.

No,I like to go out on the trails just as much.It is a NP242 transfer case.
I ended up buying the Rough Country 4.5" with the rear leaves and the quick-disconnects and steering stabilizer.

I did an SOA conversion on my YJ. I think this gave me about 5.5" of lift. I tried running it without a SYE for a while and diddn't have a problem at first. But about 2 or 3 months after the lift was done, and after some moderate wheeling, I blew out a U-Joint while driving down the road. This was a real pain in the ass to deal with at that point in time (more a matter of inconvinience than of difficulty). My YJ has the 2.5L not the 4.0 HO. Judging from my experience I would say anyone who is running a big lift (anything over 3") on their SY is asking for trouble. It doesn't matter if your driving it or wheeling it, it will blow out. If you do wheel it it will blow out even sooner. The kit is necessary, don't lift without it. Honestly I would suggest doing an SOA and swapping the NP-231 for a Dana 300. If the NP-231 output is on the wrong side, don't worry they make kits to flip the 300. The whole thing will cost you less than the lift kits you are talking about. It will wheel better and have a much stronger T-Case with no SY to deal with. You will also get to keep your stock springs which are pretty nice compared to big arch aftermarket springs. If axle wrap is a concern for those high throttle mud blasting moments then just install a ladder bar (anti-axle wrap device). They are cheap to buy or super easy to fabricate yourself. Good luck, and wheel it like you stole it!

IMHO, a SYE is absolutely necassary on any jeep, regardless of lift size. The SY on the 231 is a joke, and easily breakable. I never broke mine, but after watching 3 local guys bust theirs on one run, I say it it a must.

(Also, talk to Colby at performance off road center, I got mine from him for 170 delivered to my front door. I used a d-shaft off of the front of a 1991 exploder, had it rebuilt, shortened and balanced for $165. That total is $335, well worth not having to trailer home...)

you iwll HAVE to have one with 4" plus lifts...the driveline angle will be far too much for the slip yoke to handle and will destroy Ujoints and/or the 231 tail cone if wheeled

We installed one on a buddies Jeep this past weekend and his main comment was how the hell did I run without this. It will make everything feel better and add a ton of strength to a weak setup.

dude, jeep made more than one model. I take it is a grand cherokee or cherokee because it has a 242 case
if it is a GC, you will need to get a different tracbar bracket in the rear when going to a CV shaft
