: Charlie Copsey DROVE the winch point on Proving Grounds

I figured this deserved its own thread. For those of you who know where I'm talkin' about, he crawled it with 2 guys pullin' on his cable(he hooked it up just in case, it's a long ways down--never loaded it though). I've got the whole thing on video. I don't don't how easily I would have believed it if I didn't see it. He was driving the vehicle in the link below. No way no how without rear steer, and I really don't think he could have done it without 2 people pulling either.

elf_cruiser 04-01-2002, 09:36 AM WAIT JUST A FAWKING MINUTE!!!!!!!!!
ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THE ENTRANCE TO UPG, THE LITTLE CRVICE WHERE YOU TURN HARD LEFT AND CLIMB, OR THE 12 FOOT VERTICAL WALL ABOUT 100 YARDS UP THE TRAIL??????????
Cause, you know know, lots of peeps have made it up the entrace, but i don't see how anybody could scale that massive wall with no winch.
rockbound 04-01-2002, 09:40 AM pics, please, lets see the spot!
The vertical wall baby. Never been driven as far as I know, until now. I've got a pic of me on the wall. I'll find it and post a link in a minute.
rockbound 04-01-2002, 09:44 AM yeah, lets see the pic, sounds pretty sweet!
Not the greatest pics, but there are a few on this link. The first pic is the first obstacle, and the next 4 or so are all of the winch point that Charlie drove. We ran the trail last year and it was all driveable except the winch point. This year everything was WAY washed out. Nobody that I saw could even drive the obstacle right before the winch point. BIG pile of broken vehicles at the entrance(including mine).

rockbound 04-01-2002, 09:52 AM damn he is the man if he drove that!! cool pics!!
44Runner 04-01-2002, 12:30 PM I'm callin April fool's on this thread...

Holy shiat!!!, i completely forgot it was april fool's day.
i definitley agree, there are just certain things that physics will not allow. Like 12 foot verticle walls being scaled by buggies with 110" wheelbases...
nice try, Ryan!
Chris Geiger 04-01-2002, 12:39 PM I just got back from doing proving grounds on wed, I don't see how anyone could drive it without a winch. You would need somehing like 150" wheel base to prevent your from rolling over backwards.
borton 04-01-2002, 12:56 PM seems to me that two fat butts tuggin on a cable could be keepin him from going over backwards, and if he could keep moving forward, its doable
LOL, this is hilarious. I didn't even think about it being April Fools.
I don't blame you for not believing it...BUT, there's about 30 witnesses, and 4 or 5 of them caught it on video:D BFE Films(I think that's what they're called)was filming it as well. I don't have the hookups to put my footage online(likely story huh? LOL). Dave Kennedy from Petersens was there also shootin' a few pics. I don't think I would have believed it either if I didn't see it.
He drove most of it with no cable, nobody pulling. His fronts were just about at the top when they hooked the cable and started pulling. Curtis from Teraflex was one of the guys pulling(I wouldn't really say he's much of a 'fat butt', LOL), and I don't remember who the other guy was.
I do have to say it was the craziest thing I have ever seen. I don't know how he didn't fall off the wall, but he stuck to it somehow and crawled the whole thing.
The Adam Blaster 04-01-2002, 01:55 PM Well, looking at those pics, i now need to see the video to believe you.
I'll email you with my home address and you can make a copy of the tape and send it to me. :flipoff2:
Greg@RME 04-01-2002, 02:01 PM Though its hard to say, I believe it. Charly's ride is dialed in to near perfection. His driving skills aren't lacking either.....
Cliffy [JD] 04-01-2002, 03:55 PM I GUESS WE ALL KNOW WHAT TIREs WE'RE GETTING NEXT......:D................DAYUM!!!
pure-adrenaline 04-01-2002, 10:49 PM someone needs Charlie to reply.....If he says he did it, then it happened. He dosn't have braggin in his blood. He's a good driver and has a kick ass new rig. I could see him being the first to climb it.
The Fleckster 04-02-2002, 12:41 AM *******

*******
Not to mention a Klune-V Crawler box, or a hell of a setup for that matter. But stranger things have happened in my Scout Traveler that were not supposed to be possible.

jeeper111 04-02-2002, 12:53 AM until I see real proof that he did it I dont believe it. I had trouble climbing up that thing myself and I dont think that a vehicle can climb 12 feet strait up and hold on to the rock. Show me the proof and I will change my tune:flipoff2: :D
okcrawler 04-02-2002, 06:09 AM From what I gather it has eroded pretty bad and is now doable. I hear all the WMS boys did it last weekend. John climbed it first, then Mark and Casey came out the next day and went up it.
I saw the video of Mark trying it last year. He rolled the Toy thing over backwards on the first attempt. This year they all made it... Hmmm, something changed, and it's not Mark's wheelbase.....

WOW. The WMS guys were right behind us, and we didn't stick around after we all got up the wall. Charlie's front left was in the crack on the left side, which didn't really look much different than it did when I was down there last year, maybe washed out a *little* bit. The rest of the wall is solid rock. Having that crack washed out a little could make the difference though. I've never seen anybody try to drive it, so I never really noticed if it would make a huge difference or not. I even SAW Charlie drive up it, and I'm havin' a hard time believing anybody else could drive it, LOL. A friend is getting his pics developed soon(not sure how many or how good), and I'll post 'em when I can get them from him. Might be a while though.
Did any of the WMS boys have rear steer? I didn't notice. I don't see any way you could climb it without rear steer, but I guess I didn't think Charlie could climb it either, even *with* rear steer, LOL.

yeah jeeper's shit broke before he even got there so he had to climb it himself. haha:flipoff2:
okcrawler 04-02-2002, 07:15 AM None of the WMS trucks have rear steer yet, but they are all 110" or longer WB. Casey's is like 120", and he has talked about rear steer (in my opinion he needs it BAD)....
Clifton from Avalanche was there with the WMS boys as well. Maybe he'll chime in.
Oops, looks like we posted at the same time okcrawler. Didn't think any of them did. If they climbed it without rear steer, wow...
jeeper111 04-03-2002, 12:41 AM At least my jeep has been to moab. Swamper502s cant even make it out of my parking lot. LOL
:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :rasta:
Your brakes are :rainbow: you should go home and drink a  and leave all the real 4wheeling to me. HAHA:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :D
okcrawler 04-03-2002, 06:12 AM I've got a correcton on the WMS boys. I found out last night that they climbed the waterfall on Upper Hellodorodo, NOT Proving Grounds! :(
I guess that one is owned by Charlie! As soon as they show us some proof.... :D :D :D
We ran Upper Heldorado on Wednesday, and the waterfall has changed a bit. I can see how some could drive it. One of our guys only loaded the cable for the first foot or so and drove the rest(the rest of us were broke), and he's only at 98" WB.
I'm going to see if I can get my video of Charlie put online somehow. Might be a while though.
Shannon 04-03-2002, 05:52 PM I just called Charlie to tell him he was famous! He confirmed that yes, he did do it and he feels with a slightly different line he could probably drive it without anyone with a strap on the front.
BTW, Curtis who was on the front is NOT a big guy at all. He weighs all of 165 or so.
I'm sure Charlie would by happy to build you a rig so you too can climb it! He built 3 mostly identical rigs, except for motors, that are competing in RRCA this year.

aaronlosey 04-03-2002, 06:05 PM http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=4291936979
there are pics of everyone winching up the last hill on the proving grounds in that album. but it loads super slow. has the wms boys and cliff. they all have their winches out though.
those pics have been getting hammered for bandwidth though, so they might be slow to load or not at all. good luck.

The WMS boys drove the Upper Heldorado waterfall, Charlie drove the Proving Grounds waterfall. Not sure about the BFE Films guys name. He was kinda tall and skinny with short blond hair. There was also a girl filming, not sure if she was with him, and I didn't really notice what she looked like. We watched the video of Charlie again last night, STILL can't believe it.
Oh, and thanks Shannon:D What a fluke that I ended up posting this on April Fools Day, LOL. BTW, your old boss just pitched in with a little sponsorship cash to get me goin' in UROC, LOL. JD is my Dad's neighbor. He used to say that you were into the rockcrawlin' thing and he just didn't understand it, now he's supporting it. Kinda funny. I think my Dad spent a little time checkin' out your Bronco too to get ideas for his. In fact, I think he has your old cage. Remeber how long ago that was? Well, he's hoping to have it running in another month or so, LOL. Talk about draggin' your feet.

Yup, my old cage all right. What a small world. Tell JD hi for me! He's a maniac, especially on sleds.
BTW, Charlie would appreciate a copy of the video if you have a chance. He's just in Alpine.
This was the first competition I missed since we started competiting way back when in Las Cruces. I'm going through major withdrawals. Just too much being on the east coast now. I do get to go to Tellico and I'm headed to Paragon, PA in June. The Smokies are beautiful, but nothing like the Rockies.

Do you remember Chris Holley? I'm usually wheelin' with him, drive an FJ40 that used to be tan. Anyway, just makin' the connection.
We were planning on getting a copy of the video to him. I guess my wife gave Charlie my e-mail address so he could send us his mailing address. But he just memorized it, so he's probably forgotten it. Anyway, I've got his #, I'll give him a call.
So what about EROCC or whatever it is, is that close to you? I know it isn't ARCA(or RCAA I guess)...

yea, I know who curtis is, just didn't know he was one tugging when this was first posted, and I'd say 165 is being generous ;)
Greg@RME 04-04-2002, 01:52 PM Even thought its been confirmed, I guess I'll add to it. I saw the video last night and he did drive it. The rear steer made a huge diffrence, he was able to perfectly adjust where his rear tires sat in the notch. It seemed that the trick was to get the tires wedged in and allow the pressure on the sidewalls to keep him moving forward. It was quite impressive. I still have my doubts about driving it w/o the rear steer though......Guess I'll have to see that one in person.
