: Leaky orbital valve
madmarx 04-01-2002, 12:19 PM I have the chance to buy an orbital valve for $60. The problem is that it leaks around the input shaft. The dust seal/wiper has been replaced. Is there a seal inside on the shaft that can be replaced? I don't have the valve in my hands to tear it apart and check...
Not if someone else buys it first :p lol - just kidding
madmarx 04-01-2002, 12:51 PM Gee thanks David....Your not supposed to read your own BBS...:flipoff2: Leave it alone, it might be mine :-)
BTW I am almost not a newbie now... only 5 or so more posts...
Go for it - there has to be a seal in there to replace, just a matter of getting the part and tearing into it :)

affirmative on another seal inside the tower which holds the input shaft. What type of orbital valve? A lot of the charlyn valves have two o-rings.One is a 20 cent round o-ring which you can buy at the local hardware store. The other one is a square o-ring that runs about 8 bucks from the local tractor dealer...Hope this helps.:D
madmarx 04-02-2002, 03:47 AM As soon as I hear from the guy on David's website about the valve, I'll pass on the info. He said it was an orbital for a 3 inch ram with 8 inches of stroke. Guess I will buy it and go from there. Thank you for the help.
brector 04-02-2002, 05:42 AM Better get it before I do!!!!!
J/K :flipoff2:
madmarx 04-02-2002, 05:52 AM I already sent him my shipping info, and the money order is going in the mail at lunch... I have a bunch of changes going in my Jeep in the next few weeks. Hydroboost brakes, Hydro steering, COmp Cams 280h cam and Performer intake, HEI distributor, and my on board air. Oh yea, and I just bought a JD2 bender. Gonna be busy :-)
madmarx 04-11-2002, 06:03 AM Well, I got the leaky orbial valve, and the seller did not mention a couple things. The first was that the input shaft was broken right where a hole is through the shaft for a roll pin or bolt. The second and much more irritating thing is that he welded a nut for a quick release steering wheel to the input shaft. That is what cooked the seal and made it leak. And makes the input shaft non removable:mad3: :mad3: :mad3: I am working on getting that nut off :-)
I am slightly ticked. I should have let brector get it...
Sucks to hear it - hope you can get it resolved...
madmarx 04-11-2002, 08:56 AM I'll try to post some pics after I get it resolved...

4x4realm 04-11-2002, 01:10 PM If it's a char lynn and has the gear set I'm looking for I'll buy it off you.
madmarx 04-11-2002, 01:19 PM I am not certain what it is yet. I looks very similar to a powersteering box. It has 5 threaded holes. 1 each for pressure, left, right, and it has 2 return lines. The input shaft bolts to the main body with 4 bolts. On the body is something that looks like a large o or g or d and then the letters oss and below that are a bunch of numbers, including a patent number. I figure that is the numbr that will tell me the manufacturer. I cut the nut off and now I have it almost all the way apart. The input shaft slides into another shaft and has a check ball holding it in place. I can't get the check ball out. If that would comeout, and I can found out who made tis thing, I might be able to buy an input shaft.
4x4realm 04-11-2002, 01:36 PM check out Northerntool they have valves and shafts there and I think the shafts are interchangeable. Try northerntool.com

that sucks that the valve was in that condition and the seller didn't tell you about it.Is this the valve that was for sale for $60 bucks on the MTTR web board. The shaft breaking is the exact reason I do not recommend drilling a hole to put a bolt into that shaft to mate a u-joint onto the steering shaft of the valve.I always cut a keyway and use a set screw.Always thought it weakend the shaft and those shafts are pretty small. Anyways keep us posted. :D
madmarx 04-11-2002, 07:31 PM Yep this was the one that was for sale on the MTTR site. I e-mailed the seller, and he said he will refund my money, so I am sending it back. Brian, are you going to be getting any more good used valves any time soon? I did take a few pictures I might post later...
