I found a 77 J truck at the pick & pull. I couldn't crawl underneath for a good look, but I believe it has a T18 and a Dana 20. I want to get the T18, but not the transfer case as they want 150 plus core charge for the case. What do I need to get with the trans to be able to use it with a standard dana 20 transfer case?

Got my t18(t98) out of a 68 j-truck all you need to do is make sure to get the 1 inch thick adaptor that is between the trans and t-case the t-case unbolts with the 5 texas pattern bolts the adaptor is bolted to the back of the trans with 5 or 6 bolts in a circle around the output shaft of trans . Hope this helps

For 77, that T18 will have either the 3" or 5" adapter between the bellhousing and case depending on either 258 or 360. This was so that the tcase for the 6 or 8 was in the same place and both had same length driveshafts. Also to put the shifters back far enough so they are not under the dash ;)

Thanks for the help, the engine is already gone, so I don't know what it was. The bellhousing is still there though. From what you are saying then I am thinking that all I need to do is seperate the trans and adapter from the transfer case and I can use the trans with any other Dana 20. Is that correct?

There should be 2 adapters, one between BH and trans and between the trans and tcase. Yah, any D20 should bolt to the tcase with texas pattern.

Offroad.com has a good page on the FSJ T18

Yup, just get the adapter on the back. If your D20 was attached to a T-14 or a TH400 you will also need the bull gear.

There will be two adapters only if it was behind a V8 J-truck and it will be the long, 5" adapter. The six cylinder J-truck T18's bolted directly to the bellhousing. I have two of them in my shop.

and if you cant USE that long input shaft ( if its from a V8 its damn near 15 inches long!)

then you simply unbolt the bellhousing and adapter, then swap in a FORD T18 input shaft and bearing retainer.

and its the shortest T18+ Tcase adapter you can get.
