Right now my willys project (47cj2a body, 52 m38a1 frame) Has the factory D44 in the back and a d25 in the front. What year CJ can I rob a front d30 from? I'd like something a little stronger than teh 25, and something with diskbrakes. I'm running 33"s now. I've heard I can use the 5.38 gears out of my d25 in the d30... any truth to this?

Also is is possible to get axel shafts with the 5x5.5 pattern to match the rear or will my best bet be to run spacers?

Most simple swap, get a dana 30 from a CJ. These axle's are 5on5.5 bolt pattern and most have disk brakes. Also you might want to invest in getting the amc20 rear. This will make the width's the same, and they are very cheap.

Let me correct myself, the rear is offset so the 20 wont work.

Convert the 25 to disks.

Discs were optional starting in 1976 on the CJ. They were standard starting in 1977. The 1981 and newer CJ Dana 30s used the weaker 5 bolt hub that Warn only makes their standard lockouts for, no premiums. In 1982 the track width got wider, the earlier ones are only 2 inches wider than the front axle you have. So you want 1977-1980 or possibly 1976 CJ Dana 30 if you're going to do this and not change anything else. It will bolt right up to your springs, but it most likely wont have 5.38 gears.

You can not use the gears from your dana 25 in a dana 30, the dana 25 has a bigger ring gear, 7.75" vs 7.2". Reider Racing and Randy's Ring and Pinion both list 5.38 gears for the Dana 30.

All CJ Dana 30s have the same 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern as your's. Only the Wranglers have the smaller 5 on 4.5" pattern.

The cheapest way to do what you want is to put discs on your Dana 25. You could use pretty much the same technique to put them on the rear axle, too. Here's how: http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/93298/index.html

Thanks for the info... Looks like I will keep my 25 for now and then next winter throw some waggy 44's or somethign bigger under it... My main goal for now is to get it finished so I have a rig for the summer
