Well I just weighed (on a bathroom scale) a new 38 x 14.5 x 15 TSL/SX, and a 37 x 12.50 x 15 Goodyear MTR.....

38 SX = 85lbs
37 MTR = 65lbs

Interesting.....

yes, not as big a diff as i would have thought

how do the sidewall thicknesses compare?? I know the sx's are thick, but what about the MTR?? Do they get real thin near the tread like most radials??

20 lbs a tire, thats a big ass difference, thats 80 - 100 lbs if you have a spare on board,

But I'll take the 20lbs for the sidewall strength, the mtr can't be as strong as the sx's. just my opinion!

i think thats a pretty big difference when talking "Un-Sprung Weight" ......
i'm going to take a bathroom scale to work today, (and weight a few different tire/sizes) i'm curious about 35" BFG's, they sure feel light.........

Those 20 lbs are big for a smaller engine when this is Rotational Weight as well.

I wanna point out that he is comparing a 14.5 to a 12.5, I am wondering how my 38x12.50 SXs weigh compared to a 37x12.50 MTR, more of an apples vs apples!!??:D

That plus the fact that there is NO SUCH THING as a 38X14.50 SX. 38.5X14.50 is what ya got there, right Lance? :D

The reason that .5 is important is that the various 38.5 Interco tires are really in a different class than the 38's. BTW, can't help ya on the 38X12.50 SX, but the NON-SX TSL weighs 72lbs, and the non-SX 38.5X16 weighs 90lbs.

Yes, that's why i said i thought there would be more difference. The SX seems right, but i would have thought that the MTR would be lighter. that's why i asked about the sidewall, cause i know the MTR doesn't have steel in its sidewall, like the SX does.

Waiting for the tech writeup lance...

What the big differance between the 38, and 38.5's?

Two inches. The non-SX TSL 38X12.50 was once the largest tire in Interco's lineup. At that time, it was stamped 13X37. And 37 is a much better description - actually, it even comes up short of that (my 38X12.50's measured EXACTLY 36" on 10" rims measured horizontally). The 36X12.50 was added to the line before the 38.5X16, so they just rebadged the 37 at that time - 38X12.50. The 38 looks pretty much just like a 36 at a glance, and that's because there's only about .5-.75" difference in diameter. The 38.5X16 looks NOTHING like a 38. Even the 38.5X14.50 SX is WAY bigger than a 38X12.50, though it is a fuzz smaller than the 38.5X16 non-SX.

The difference in size AND performance is great enough that this is where I chose to draw a line in my mud racing classes. Hot Street allows up to 38.0 stamped height - specifically stating "no 38.5's allowed" in the rules.

Bottom line, a "38" is like an oversized "36" where a "38.5" is, well a "38.5".

To answer that you'd have to figure out what 1/4 inch of Diameter does to the radius.....That'll give you a better idea of how different they are.:smokin:

I think the MTR sidewall is plenty strong...

This isn't a really good pic, but it's a shot of my old Jeep when I had it on 38's up front & 38.5's in back. Even on 15X15 rims, the 38.5's were a full inch taller than the 38's.

Thats great, now how much does the F#$@N rim weigh? Seriously, I really would like to know the difference between the 38x12.50 SX and the 37x12.50 MTR, the rim weighs something, it doesnt do us any good. Im about to go home tonight, dismount one of my freshly mounted 38x12.50 to find out. Must be a better way. I remember someone else talking before about shipping weights. If we compared the two, wed be alot closer. You know Lance is jus sittin back laughin right now!!!!!!!:flipoff2:

So the 38x12.5 (86lbs) weighs more or about the same as the 38x14.5 (85lbs)?? How can that be?

Chark
04-03-2002, 03:29 PM
Cause I've only had "my" 12.50 on "my" bathroom scale....and that's my last comment on weigh of tires.....hell it's not a race car!!! Who gives a shit what they weigh!!! :smokin: :smokin:

just for reference, i weighed some tires a work yesterday,

65 lbs = 36x12.5x15 swamper TSL (bias)
73 lbs = 38x12.5x16.5 swamper TSL (bias)
69 lbs = 35x12.5x15 swamper TrXus M/T
92 lbs = 37x12.5x16.5 swamper radial SSR (load range E)
76 lbs = 15/38.5x15 ground hawg
65 lbs = 315/85R15 (36") Buckshot mudder (radial)

i'm sure the 35" bfg's are less the any of these..(but we are out of stock of the m/t and at/s.

if anyone wants, i'll weigh some smaller tires like 33's,
but don't stock larger ones, (have to wait until a customer special orders some)
