: rear triangulated suspension w/ leafs
yager 04-01-2002, 06:44 PM Ok lets have it ! This is what ive got so far. Tear in to it... lets see if ya can find any potential problems......
Basically this is a toy axle swap on a samurai, ive extended the wheel base ~10" I wanted to run leafs (i have loads of em) but didnt want to have em dragging on the ground. Im building this thing to run with minimal lift. Tires are 32" tsl-radials
heres my theory.....
Lower link is a triangular "skid" using a 2.5" johnny joint under the tcase output and some bushings on the axle. [The torque/ pinion adjusting link is not on but will be tied to lower link so assume no axle wrap.] Will have CV shaft.

Leafs are mounted up high and will control lateral movement and support weight of vehicle.
The lower skid will be braced and skined to protect shaft and allow for easier surfing...
http://www.yager.net/zukin/projects/r-susp/yag-link.jpg
The axle will be attached to the lowed link by a simple shackle using some yj bushings. This will allow the link and springs to travel different arcs yet still control side to side. Shocks will be mounted somewhere....
Ideas? Sugestions? Comments?
elf_cruiser 04-01-2002, 07:03 PM I think it is a good idea, but you will still get a lot of sideways movement from the rear end. I would suggest reversing the a-arm and making it an upper link, and then running the traditional two lower links parralel with the frame. Good idea though...
yager 04-02-2002, 04:40 AM No one has opinions ? Is this the POR ? Did i post to the wrong board? :-)
spencurai 07-10-2002, 03:40 PM i think it should work ok. it really does not matter if you put the a-link on the top or bottom. it does it's job either way. i just dont like using leafs on a custom trick suspension because of the departure angle issues. i am building a zuk but using aerostar coils in the rear and maybe up front also. looks cool though!! you should put it in the zuk forum...:D
Flatty 07-10-2002, 03:44 PM Simple questoin s WHY???? Just go get yourself some of them springs and make some 1/4 elliptic springs out of them. Run the 3 link with a panhard and call it a day.
dimitri
You would be better off with just conventional leaf springs or a full on 3 link/quarter eliptic. I see no advantage to that setup.
Also, you are asking that single Johnny joint to support way too much load.

Or just use the springs you have and run leafs
Oxjockey 07-10-2002, 04:06 PM I'd think that under compression, you may actually push that shackle into the springs more than bend the springs. What keeps the weight of the vehicle from fully coming down on the tube? I don't really see the point of the extra links.

BINGO !!! Thats kinda what happened on a quick tack all to gether test... To complicated for what i was wanting, with work it may have worked....
I now have some SIMPLE 150# coils on a simple weight jacker setup and the uppers will be 2 simple links to the same lower "skid" link
its still in progress but moving along...

twistedmetal 07-10-2002, 07:16 PM Are you mainly running the wishbone to protect the DS? If so, mount the springs on lift blocks, then put a shackle on the Johnny Joint end. It will still stop axle wrap, and protect the DS. The shackles are going to be under way to much stress to handle their position. I think you just may have too many moving parts. Let us know what you decide to do:) .
Air Ride 07-10-2002, 07:40 PM tri this works great on light weight rigs
Air Ride 07-10-2002, 07:43 PM another angle
leafs are the upper links
the triangle meeting uder the t-case is the way to go. Much less rear steer and less engine torq lifting the the body.
yager 07-10-2002, 08:27 PM this is where its headed.... i should add some updated pics...
NO LEAFS -now i have a great departure angle
Lower link will remain as is and be reinforced.
2 upper links will be added in a reversed triangle from the lower.
It will basically be a link type suspension with coils.
Ive seen other rigs with a similer set up only the links floped... (johny joint link on center/top of axle etc...)
The whole idea with this was to protect the drive shafts AND allow for easier gliding over stuff.... one of the bigest problems on a light weight rig is "drag" stoping you....
new stuff....( thread in zuke section (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66179) )
Im mid way through cutting out the frame rails to make a perimeter frame where the rockers are... going for a boat like \_/ hull setup.... wont change the center but frees up 4-5" on both left/right outter 1/3 ----plus ill be adding service panels under the seats....
must........make........more......... ground.........clearence........

yager 07-10-2002, 08:39 PM ok ok after studing your picture for a few minutes.....
what size are those tires? that looks like 3" roll cage tube... ok well not that big...
Got any full rig shots?

pmurf1 07-10-2002, 08:48 PM Airbag,
What limits the compression on that suspension design? Looks like the shocks? Does it pogo much say if you were shooting across the flats back to the lakebed at the Hammers with all the whoop di do's? I like how the lower control arms are tucked in more from damage. Does the spring mount on top of the axle also pivot 90 degrees opposite of it, or does it need it? Maybe you've added an airbag or something since then, just curious how bad it hops in the rear with torque and whoops.
Air Ride 07-10-2002, 10:21 PM The pics were taken just after I moved the rear axle back 3". I cut the bump stops off to move them back, but haven't replaced them yet.
It work great in the whoops and I doesn't have any bad wheel hop. The front bottoms out long before the rear does and I have to slow down.
The air bags are not in the pic but they push on the middle of the spring, give it about a 10" ride height adjustment. If you want to see more pic go to C4C pics.

EasyXJ 08-02-2002, 05:05 AM Airbag, can you give us a link to your pics, can't find c4c pics. I'm getting ready to build an air bag assist 1/4 ellip next month and was wanting to see other designs than what I have in my head.

Yeah, I've heard of Parts Mike, what's he got to do with anything???? :flipoff2:

Screw that, scratch it and go 4 link. Obviously, you can afford it.
