: Warn 8274 gear collision
prienn 02-10-2006, 10:28 PM Just tore my 8274 apart, and found out why I was hearing some metallic noises. The large drum gear is rubbing against the larger cam/brake gear. The rubbing is occuring on the sides of both gears.
This obviously isn't normal, so what am I missing?
trkklr77 02-11-2006, 02:14 AM first guess is a bushing. my explodes leave a little to be desired on the insides, it came straight from warn but the list the entire lower caser as 1pn# and it doesnt show any over the lower gears and parts in the lower half. better check the rebuild by billavista in the tech dpet.
How old is the winch?
Did you buy it used?
If you bought it new,Warn(call) may fix it for free?
Obviously there is somthing wrong.I took apart one that I have to change the oil.Pulled the top cover/motor off cleaned the inside.During reassembly, there is a plate on the inside of the big gear and housing. It was a bitch to get this in the correct location as it has a slot towards the bottom which locates the gear assembly.
Maybe this was not inthe correct location.Just a thought.
prienn 02-11-2006, 08:19 AM I know whatcha mean by the diagram of the internals lacking detail. No bushing evident in assembly or in the diagram.
I did follow billavistas article. Great info.
The winch is probably 30 years old. The lock plate is installed correctly, really only one way to get it in there, but still can be a pain.
Thanks guys.
trkklr77 02-11-2006, 02:29 PM what is your serial ## and date code??
prienn 02-11-2006, 08:37 PM It's an earlier 8274. P/N 8403, S/N 51430, Date Code: DS7
trkklr77 02-11-2006, 10:15 PM you got me beat, s# 79001 d/c at8 = jan 1978
prienn 02-11-2006, 10:33 PM So is DS7 something like April 1977?
trkklr77 02-12-2006, 12:00 PM So is DS7 something like April 1977?
yup, late april
if you realy want to, go find a callender for 77. the second letter [s] is the working week day of the month , so it will probably be the april 25 or higher.
mikecj5cj8 02-12-2006, 05:35 PM Not to hijack the thread but, I tore into mine to clean up the gears. How much gear oil do you need to fill it up? Billavista article says "6 oz. of 30 wt" That doesn't seem like much.
trkklr77 02-12-2006, 06:36 PM no it doesnt,
there is a seal for the drum but its not a true oil seal so leakage is likely.
edit:
it doesnt look like anything more than a flat o-ring

the end of the drum is solid so oil cant flow through it and out the end. i dont think putting any more in will hurt anything either.
2xedit: after a serious swim and 5 years of use and neglect with little more than grease for the brake pawl it maybe time for a full rebuild.
trkklr77 02-12-2006, 07:28 PM i just got a this pm and is a very comon ??
could you help me with some numbers...
FT3???? June 19xx?
Thanks
the date code
1st letter is the month f=may
2nd letter is the work day of said month t=25+. this is hard to pin down with out a calender for that year.
the # in the year of the decade it was made 3=73/83/93/03
this is where the serial ### comes in. i cant say exactly but in the first 125000 were the 70's 125-250,000 where the 80's 250+ 90's ............ this is just something ive noticed, the true figures maybe way different

The gears don't need to be flooded.
When the gears rotate, the oil is picked up by the teeth and works it way up.Just like the the JB oil treatment display at some auto stores, you know the one with a clear plastic box with gears ond oil inside and you rotate the handle and watch the oil.
trkklr77 02-13-2006, 03:57 PM i am retarded, f is the 6th letter of the alphabet, f=june
