: stupid FF ?
if i turned a nine inch into a FF will there be less stress on the axle shaft ?
it would be a 28 spline shaft
also if i did this to a scout rear 44 would that be comparable
strength wise to the nine inch ?
the shafts strength that is :smokin:
keep in mid this goin into a explorer with a 4.0, C4 dana 20
and running 456 gears with 38 sx's :smokin:
yea i know the nine inch has more shit for it,but the 44 has more clearance and this is not a rock only rig its a little of every thing ,except sand  :D
thanks
Alx
hammer away please :flipoff2:
Grandpa Jeep 04-02-2002, 07:29 AM Yes, converting to Full Float puts less stress on the axle shaft since it no longer has to support the weight of the vehicle. Unless your vehicle is heavy I don't think it gains you a whole lot. Wouldn't it be easier to convert your 9" to 31 or 35 spline shafts rather than convert it to FF? What's wrong with your stock 8.8? You could convert it to 31 spline if it's not already.
thinking FF for flat towing :D and well the 8.8 is the wrong bolt pattern it dont macth the D44 up front :D
ive got an 31 spline 9 inch but this goin to be spooled ,so im just checkin out my options.
thanks
Grandpa Jeep 04-02-2002, 10:02 AM Warn makes a FF kit for the 8.8 that would also convert the 5 on 5.5. You could also specify 6 on 5.5 or maybe even 8 lug.
warn doesnt make that kit for the exploerer 8,8 any more
and the 8.8 is not an option :smokin:
edit ( this is all home made )
KAcrawler 04-02-2002, 12:05 PM i would not run any kind of 44 with 38's for any length of time especially is it is locked. look around some guy munched his 9" ring gear and detroit. there is a thread about it. run a 35 spline 60 or something

Well, in that case, I would weld on some ends like these (http://www.r-p4wd.com/java/product_pages/randp7.htm) and use either Warn or front D44 spindles with them.
Get some custom axle shafts made with 31 splines on one end and 30 splines on the other and some Warn 30 spline lockouts. Use front D44 brake hardware and rotors with a bolt pattern to match your front.
If that's not enough strength for you, weld on some ends that are compatable with front D60 spindles, (those may work, I don't know) get some axles made with 35 splines on both ends, run front D60 hubs and a matching locker/spool of your choice and some 35 spline locking hubs to match. Use d60 front brake hardware. Then either convert the 60 hubs to match the front or convert the front to 8 lug.
You're looking at a fair amount of money and trouble either way so I wouldn't bother trying to use 28 spline shafts. You need a locker anyway, might as well get a 31 or 35 spline. You might be able to save some money on axle shafts by using FF D60 or D70 shafts. Cut the flange off and have splines rolled on the cut end.
