For whatever reason my shifter in my K5 is getting stuck when I shift from 1st gear (not Granny) to reverse. I have to remove it and replace it in the shift rails. I't is really frustrating when you are trying to get unstuck or tow someone out and you have to stop everything and pull it apart. Any help appreciated

I see you "hang" with J-rod......Sounds like you are prolonging a rebuild of the 4 speed. Are the sychronizers looking like they are worn?

J-rod is my roomate. The syncronizers are about 55,000 miles old and have had AMSoil in them the entire time. I haven't looked at them but it is really pissing me off. Think it would make a difference if I welded the Bottom of the shifter up. It has that roll pin in it and it has picked up a little play. Know what Im talkin about?

k cool....tell him hello. Yeah I know what your talking about. DON'T DO IT it will melt because that piece is a very brittle part....I've broke the whole side of one off just jamming gears!! That sucked.....Look into getting new pieces for it they are not that expensive. Was this trans. rebuilt? Do you have a spare to swap out? Is this in your DD? Drop it out and rebuild it.

trans is a Jasper rebuild that the guy put in the truck b4 me. I drive the 4runner every day and the Blazer is for wekends. I don't have a spare tranny but can get one. I don't want to take that route though. Do you think a Ford solid shifterwould work out of a T-18. It feels fine in there but I'm afraid that I'll be shiftin fast in the mud and all hell will cut loose. The syncronizers are fine so I'll prolly cut an access panel in the floor and replace the shift forks and rails. That might do the trick P.S. we'll prolly be wheelin soon out in Suffolk somewhere if ya wanna go.

SM465's are known for their top covers breaking. A buddy of mine had his go out and he couldnt shift at all. We were on the Con and had to call a buddy to bring us another top cover. We replaced it and all was good. Not sure what goes bad inside the top covers, (detent ball/spring) or what but that sounds like what is bad. Leave the tranny alone and swap top covers.
