i've only had this 4x4 for about a week but went wheeling today and the front end is popping a lot but still pulls fine. I was wondering if the big u joints connecting the hub to the axle could be loose or have slack in them and need replaced or if possibly the people who had the truck before me could have mismatched the gears in the from and rear? i would really like to get this straightened out asap. i'll check the gear ratios the next chance i get but i was just trying to check and see if anyone out there knows anything else that could be causing the constant popping when wheeling. also could it possibly be a combination of the two. please let me know. by the way, it's a 74 k10 pickup 1/2 ton on 35s.

do u have gear fluid in the front diff? something u should check it could be the friction of the gears, and also check ur u joints out and see if there still good.

Did you ever bother to open the diff up and see if there is anything odd in there before you wheeled it?
My guess would be there is something broken inside the pumkin and when you engage it and that diff fluid goes sliging around, what ever is broken in there is jaming in between gears. Could be just a broken gear or two. Everything would still work fine but occasionaly a broken tooth getting jammed between another tooth could make an occasional popping noise.
Would also check your u-joints, make sure they arnt floppen around in the axles or drivline.
I dont think your looking at a mismatched gear ratio, athough I suppose it is possible but if you were playen with the 4 wheel drive in the dirt, I dont think you would have herd anything, the front tires would probably just have spun a little bit faster in the front than the rear, you would feel this more than hear it unless you were playen on rocks. If you were on the pavement, you might have herd the front tires screeching and would have probably broken something.

guess what, your right. it was a sperm whale that died then was being transported through down town taiwan and popped. i bet that was a cluster fawk and a half to deal with.:barf:
i have seen one other really good pic of it, from the top of the building in the background that shows the blood smear, its about 200' long.it blew out of its back.

that is AWSOME!!!!
but you gotta wonder why the hell they were moving it from where it died to where ever in the hell they were taking it too and why they chose the downtown route, owell.
I agree with you on the spider gears, that is kinda where I was going when I was talken about broken teeth, I had a similar problem with my D44 which is why I have a mini spool in it now.

it had died on the beach and the university/research area was across town. it had sat on the beach funking for about a week, i belive it was summer time but am not 100%.
yeah ive busted d44 and 14b spiders, seem fine with the wheels straight but when you turn they start missing and popping.
