A buddy of mine bougth a new exhaust for his '69 mustang, it's one of those welditupyourself type exhaust, he asked me to weld it. The problem is, he doesn't know if it's a stainless steel exhaust or just cold rolled steel.

How can i find out if it's stainless steel or cold rolled steel?

Christof.

Hope you understand my English, Nederlands gaat me veel beter!

:usa: Some stainless steels are non magnetic such as "300" series.Place a magnet on the material and if it does not stick it is stainless.Sometimes stainless will appear to be brihgter in apperance than cold drawn steel. Some stainless steels are magnetic.Did you try to contact the mfg.?

rub it very carefully in a clockwise direction, gradually getting faster and see if a genie appears. if so its a magical exhaust.

i have no idea:rasta:

Yep, contacted the mfg, but he told me it was galvanized steel. The idiot doesn't have a clue of what it is.

Maybe he ment aluminized. That is where it has an aluminum coating simular to glavanizing to help prevent rust. If it it they just weld it like normal steel. For a collector flange I doubt it would be stainless unless the header is stainless.

Your english is better than most peoples on here. I would try the magnet first like mentioned before if the magnet doesn't stick it is an austenitic stainless like 304. if the magnet does stick it is probably carbon steel or 400 serries stainless. if you hit it with a grinder and look at the color of the sparks coming off you will be able to tell, especially if you have another piece of mild steel and stainless to compare to. If you still aren't sure, set it outside for a day or two and if it rusts it wasn't stainless.

My guess is it is aluminized plain carbon steel, but that is just a guess.

There's about a 1% chance that this item would be a martensitic (400 series) type of stainless.:D
