: 77 chevy 4x4 Steering problems
redneckcadi 02-13-2006, 12:19 PM I have a 1977 chevy 1/2 ton with a 12" lift Im runing into problems with my springs Moving as I steer to the left the shackle moves forward and the front of the spring almost comes apart ,opens slightly, I had some shims in it before and took them out due to the nuckles on the dif binding, that solved the steering radius. but now i have the suspension problem any one help the better, i need this one last thing for my monster to clear inspection..
Thanks a million in advance

i hate to have to tell you this but you need a track bar. this is a comon problem with large leaf springs. while they are not benifical to wheeling they will stabilze the leafs and steering, same goes for the rears.
redneckcadi 02-13-2006, 01:44 PM a trac bar ok i'll go see if i can find one i can order, or do they have to be made special for the truck ? any good pages to look at ?
49willys 02-13-2006, 04:13 PM Didn't say if you currently have cross over steering? A track bar won't do you any good if you still have the crappy push pull steering.
trkklr77 02-13-2006, 05:42 PM your right 49willys, open mouth insert foot.
i keep forgeting and assume thing that i shouldnt.
redneckcadi 02-13-2006, 06:33 PM yeah its not cross over i wish, Its a block on the steering arm and a drop drag link, i had it up on jacks today unhooked the draglink, and found that it seems the balljoints arn't allowing the nuckle to rotate all the way around, might be the problem,, going to get new ones and install some time next week,, any other sugestions accepted..
redneckcadi 02-13-2006, 06:37 PM yeah its not the cross over, its a block on the steering arm and a drop drag link, i think maybe one of the balljoints might be gone as i took the drag link off put it up on a jack and noticed i was unable to rotate the nuckle all the way left or right, so im going to get some new u joints see if that works, any other sugestions kindly excepted.
HsOffRoad 02-14-2006, 05:53 AM You don't need a track bar. What you need is something to keep the axle from moving forward and aft. The stock sway bar works well for this, or you can fab a link to keep the axle in-line. At the very least, build a pinch clamp to keep the leaves in the spring from separating under load. You'll lose a little flex, but you'll be able to steer - the issues from the stock steering setup only come into play when you're flexing the suspension, because since the draglink is so short it changes angle a lot as it flexes, making your steering work poorly when it's flexed out. For a mud truck or trail beater with limited front articulation, it works fine. Save your money for more important things.
