Mike- I was up there last week. You couldn't get past the powerhouse. Now, I couldn't see the bowl from where I stood but the lake is still frozen over and there's a lot of snow surrounding the lake. Not sure if this helps:confused:

Is there usually more snow on Wentworth or on Ice House by Loon?
Wondering which trailhead makes for the earlier passable starting point.

Not trying to be anyones daddy here, but it would be better for all of us if nobody zipps around the Con while the snow is still melting. Tears up too much stuff, makes bypasses, and gouges trees.;)

cbassett
04-02-2002, 09:28 PM
You're referring to wheelers that tear up stuff, make bypasses, and run into trees, right?

Was up there saturday there is about an 8' hi wall by the powerhouse with a few cars parked in front of it. The snow does look fairley deep still , we went towards Wentworth Springs ran into snow a mile or so past loon Lake rd. drove till we got to the turn off onto the dirt road to Wentworth and turned around and came home , but the tracks from somebody in front of us kept going. Wentworth tends to be realley wet during the spring runoff.

Keith
04-02-2002, 09:35 PM
yep, them too.:flipoff2: Seriosly though, even the respectable folks cant help but tear stuff up. the ground in some spots becomes very soupy, and the snow melts on the down slope side of the trail due to the water running off. Sometimes it cause one side of the trail to have no snow, while your other tire has 3 or 4 feet. There is now way to lay off the trees sometimes, and with your rig laying over soooo far scraping the trees, it ends up leaving narly gouges right at eye level. Hard to miss them when they are staring you in the face.

So is the 8' wall of snow from a plow or is it 8' of depth... the depth around the lake is what 4' ???

Mike- the 8' wall that Rusty refered to was plowed. Your guess of 4' around the lake is correct.

Hey Keith.. Tread lightly is still in full force on a 4 foot pack... and our tiny group is usally running about 15-30 mph so its not snow wheeling like your thinking. This is what we do all winter so tearing it up is not how you run in the snow up here.

I appreciate that Mike, I know you guys are not a bunch of goofballs. I just know that after the slabs on the way to Ellis and on, there is not any 30mph snow wheeling. Its been hot, and the snow is melting at a good rate, there is sure to be some runoff on the trail. But, I know you will use your good judgement.:)

Yo Aggro i was planning a trip to spider on the weekend of the 20'th of april as long as the snow keeps melting at the rate it is for the next 2 weeks. You should tag along, if you want.

If the con turns out to not be a cool thing(or if too many people think we will damage stuff) to do then i am thinkin Fordyce, but we probably would not make it past the fist crossing so we could snow wheel the road to eagle lakes is what i figgure.

Anyone know the condidtions of that area.

Ian-

P.S. Post pics if someone goes to loon. PLEASE.

No pics, but I was there Saturday. There is still a pile of snow about 4" high @ the end of the plowed part before the dam. Someone drove over it, but only went about 50' in. No reason you could'nt keep going. They wre only sinking a few inches. The lake is still frozen. I did'nt go farther to see what it was like.

Yep - been snowing up here most of the day at the Lake. Less than an inch, but it's falling on dirt. I'll bet 7000' and higher had good accumulations. I'll know for sure in the morning when I try to get in the last powder day of the year. :D

Still a small wall at the power house. Plenty of tracks going on, not me in the Burb.

I say pass able in the right rigs

It's a big wall just past the power house. It was way tall. If you aint willing to bring it just stay in pavement.

I'll just say the bowl has snow and it is deep. :flipoff2:

BnTMike
04-23-2002, 09:17 AM
So the Bowl is covered in snow still? How much average depth is there after the wall....

is it patchy in the bowl? is there any pavement showing from the power house to the dam?

thanks Mike-

Sounds like Big Rich (who knows well what a rig can do) says it's no big deal. And Kodak....well...... he says it's not really passable. :D :flipoff2:

I'll make the attempt pretty soon anyway.

We went to the granite bowl and saw rich on our way. You are not really supposed to go yet, and there is lots of water. We went because there were tracks all the way to the bowl and our atempt at wentworth failed. One side of the bowl has no snow, but the side you go down has about 3-4 feet because it gets little snow.
The condidtion of the snow was not verry fun, it was a heavy wet deep slush that buryied our rigs quick and stalled my 8274 it was so thick. Just as an idea of what it was like ther is about a foot of snow going down the dam to the spilway, and i had to winch up the last 30 feet of the road anchored to a rock on the dam. there were quite a few others that were up there, but there was only one other group that went to the bowl all other tracks stoped at the second dam. we saw the other group at wentworth wich they were going to try because they did not want to go into the granite bowl. They were set up well, adn they said it was easy but they went early morning, and we had the warm afternoon sun to bring us some shity slush.

Try and wait a couple weeks before going so the trail does not get torn up the snow depth is now low enough to where you will reach dirt on the sections with little snow and it will rip up the trail. we tried to stay only on the snow, but after the gait keeper under all those trees there is a lot of bare sections that are really wet with no snow and are getting swampy from the rigs.

It should be great by memorial day.

We climbed the wall on Icehouse Friday night. It was kinda soft, but you could ride on top okay with very little air. I lost both right beads about 150' down the trail. After that it was a pretty quick run to the spillway.
Camped at the Spillway Friday night and made it to the Granite Bowl Saturday morning. The far side it at least 50% clear, but the drop-in side is still completely covered. I walked about 1/3 the way down the face, it was 2-3' deep most places. We didn't feel up to a winch fest getting out, so we bailed and headed towards Wentworth...

Hey Ian,
You must've been the 1st FJ in the group we saw on our way to Wentworth. Man were you right, it was an off-camber slippery bitch. We bailed about where you did, and decided to hit Bassi before it's closed (which is May 6 BTW, per the USFS officials we yacked with).

Bassi was fun, not much snow at all there. A damn shame they're closing it. A damn shame we picked up so f'n much of other peoples' garbage too. And there's probably more spent shells & cartridges than pinecones at Bassi

Not with those snow conditions you won't, not to mention the knarly off cambers because of the melt, wich got a good thick coating that is now slush.
It was definatly the worst traveling snow i have ever driven on, but if you drove at night when it stiffened up you may be able to.
But you already knew all that :flipoff2: :D .

When we saw your group i was actually last in line.
I wish i had known bassi was open i was told it was closed already, or else i would have tried to go but it really does not matter because on our way out from camping at the bowl my friend dustin who was first in line broke his whole leaf pack in half, and that took a while to fix.

The next time i have a chance to go the snow will be gone because it is melting fast.
When we looked at the bowl on sunday there was half as much snow on the far side as are in your pic.

see ya up ther in the summer.

Kudos on having the restraint and consideration for the trail to not go in further... I hope other folks exercise similar restraint. Heavy use early in the season can be very hard on the resource.

I went too Loon today and their was no ice on the lake. I could not make it to the entrance because of a front loader moving snow just before the campgrounds at the end of the pavement. So I turned around and headed up to Wentworth and before the pavement even ended the snow was about 8" to 1' deep I was not about to see how far in I could go because I was the only one besides my passenger up there. I saw a couple in a jeep that was aparently up there for the same reason because I saw them on loon and wentworth. It looked like they had gotten stuck possibly because there was logs in the snow with fresh tire tracks but none past them that was not at least 2-3 days old on wentworth. I went past were they got stuck about 1/4 mile and then turned around. It was starting to rain at about that time so I headed back down the hill.
