: Saginaw pump or toy pump? Help adapting too...
I have a Toyota power steering pump (that I know works) and a used saginaw pump off like a 77. I will soon have (on its way) rebuilt saginaw box courtousey of west texas offroad.
Should I use the saginaw pump, or toyota pump, or get saginaw pump rebuit?
Also, how hard is it to adapt a saginaw pump to a 22R? (Write ups?)
Muchos gracias!
ok since this is kinda vauge here... i'm guessing your going with a hydro assist setup?
if this is true, i'm runnign a toy pump and as long as your PRM's are 1k+ it's one finger smooth as fast as you can turn the wheel...
DSI..unfortunatly I did not have th emula for hydro assist yet. I just got my Saginaw box rebuilt so that I will have a nice smooth operating pump. I got it for 40 bucks so I figured WHY NOT!
Anyway, if I ever drill and tap, I think Ill do that myself. Cant justiofy the 150 for that alone. Even though West Texas Offroad did offer me a 25 dollar discount on the drill and tap while I was rebuilding. (cewl guys over there, real organized!)
Anyway, I was just wondering since the guy I got the box from gave me the pump to, if I should run the saginaw pump of the toy pump. I was wondering if the Saginaw pump was hard to adapt since I have heard that it is more powerful. But if I run Toy pump I have to adapt lines...
So, what I am asking is which is the better choice for me considering I have both pumps...
Thanks!!!
Dont tell me I will eb the first to put a saginaw pump on a 22r...
morpheus 04-02-2002, 12:45 PM most generally swap in a saginaw pump when they swap in the GM motor but it's been done before ... to just run a sag box i'd just keep the toy pump.

v6toy4x 04-02-2002, 01:25 PM toyota pumps run at around 800-900 psi gm pumps run around 1300-1500 psi so the gm is more powerfuland flow more fluid
i think all pros bracket from their ram assist kit will adapt a gm pump to the toyota motor it runs $85
ForestCam 04-02-2002, 04:37 PM If you can find one get a pump off an Astro or a G van. These pumps have the remote resevoir kinda like the Toyota and without the resevoir body the pump itself is a lot smaller which translates into easier to fit.
Good info boys! Thanks!
I think I have made the decision to just use the toy pump. I could adapt the old beat up one but I wouldnt feel comforatable with it unless I got it rebuilt. Then I would still need some fancy brachetry to adapt, costing me time or mula... All just to get an upgraded version of what has been working great for eveyone else, the toy pump. Since I already am gonna have a more powerful box, I think Im gonna throw in the towel and go with the easier Toy pump. Then all I gott do is adapt the lines...
Thanks again, great info.
j4x485 04-02-2002, 05:48 PM I am using a saginaw box and pump that is installed but have yet to finish up the final touches on it to run it. It was the easyest part to mount the pump the box was a pain in the a**. I used the chevy bracket and just lined it up with the toyota pullies and made braces to the toyota bracket and bolted it to the toyota one. Its really strong and actually cave me more room because its farther off to the side of the engine. The lines all bolted to the box if your just doing the box and pump I would use that instead of the toyota stuff way stouter in my opinion. Good luck.:D
Dang! Right when I had my mind made up!
AHHHHH! Ill have to give it more consideration now.
Thanks!

did you mount the p/s pump up top like toyota or did you put it down where the alternator goes and move the alt. out of the way of mud and water
e cliff 04-04-2002, 12:36 AM i have a scout box on mine and i use the toy pump. i am going to put a gm pump on my engine (OFF A CADDY=REMOTE RES.) or maybe the astro van would be better??? any way you do it use a GM pump because the toy pump just doesn"t cut it.

I mounted it to the exsisting toyota pump bracket up top. I used the chevy bracket mounted to the pump and made a bracket to bolt it to the old toyota bracket. The pump sits closer to the fender now its in a good place. You have lots more room next to the distributor.
