: 10.25 too big???
nascarfreak88 02-14-2006, 08:38 AM ok im doing a SAS swap and while im at it i went ahead and got a 10.25 sterling rear so i can run 8 lugs all the way around.
is the 10.25 overkill??? i have a 1995 F150 single cab short bed 300ci. im goin to be running 37" tires for now, and most likely run 40"s soon.
i have many people sayin thats its gonna drag me down in the mud and im gonna loose about 25HP over the 8.8.
Aces'n'8s 02-14-2006, 08:52 AM If you plan to run 40's, I don't think a 10.25 is overkill. But, with your 300 I6, you are going to need to regear your axles with at least 4.56's. Is your transmission auto or manual?
What front axle are you installing?
Also, are you planning to lift this thing up 10"+?:shaking:
nascarfreak88 02-14-2006, 08:57 AM im goin to be running '78 Dana 44 up front, 9" lift with cutout fenders. in the back i have a shackle flip already, and im thinking of using the F250 springs in the rear.
gearing- i was thinking 4.88s, mabey 4.56s if i stay with 37s
right now i have the POS M5OD, 5spd, looking around now for a ZF.
VerticalTRX 02-14-2006, 09:14 AM If your only running a D44 front, a 10.25 will probably be overkill(although if you already have it I'd run it.) A 9" would be plenty sufficient to match the strength of your front axle, and can be built beyond what your 8.8 is capable of. A D60 rear would also be another option, as its slightly smaller and lighter than a 10.25.
UglyZJ 02-14-2006, 03:04 PM 40's on a bronco 8.8 would not be good. Im running a 60 rear in mine with 39.5 boggers.Either a 60 or a sterling would be fine for the rear. What you need to worry about is a 44 with 40's unless this thing is gonna be a mall crawler, you should have gone ahead and gotten a 60 front, I wish I would have
mustange70 02-14-2006, 05:30 PM the 10.25 will be just fine, and i would be questioning running 40's on a 9" anyway, yeah you can build the 9 to handle that with 35spl axles ad a fullfloat conversion, but the 10.25 is already full float and 35spl axles. they're a better option then the dana 60's to i think.
nascarfreak88 02-14-2006, 06:52 PM the only thing im worried about is the extra weight of the 10.25 draggin me down, and sinking me into the mud.
As far as the D60 goes up front- dont have the funds, nor the time/room to swap a D60 in there at this time... so the 44 is gonna have to do.
broncogearhead 02-14-2006, 07:09 PM run the sterling.
myself and a few buddys run them after blowing up the half ton stuff.
none of us have had any problems with them yet. been dragging mine through central floridas mud for almost two years now.
nascarfreak88 02-15-2006, 06:37 AM where abouts in Florida are you?? did you go to okeechobee mudfest last weekend??
bigbroncojeff 02-15-2006, 04:24 PM 10.25 is a good option and you won't have to upgrade again... make sure you don't have to address any vss issues since your truck is a 95... and don't forget about rear 60s... they are soo cheap and can have a tone ring pressed on em to work with your later model truck
broncogearhead 02-15-2006, 05:14 PM where abouts in Florida are you?? did you go to okeechobee mudfest last weekend??
im inbetween orlando and dayona.
didnt go to mudfest. i pretty much hang around the ocala forest when wheeling.

if you have the time and room to swap a 44 in whats the difference in a 60??? and it sounds like you have made up your mind with a 10.25 being to big... just my $.02
NetBSD 02-15-2006, 06:05 PM im goin to be running '78 Dana 44 up front, 9" lift with cutout fenders. in the back i have a shackle flip already, and im thinking of using the F250 springs in the rear.

dana 44 and a 10.25. i must ask why? you got a nice rear there all you need is a nice 60 to follow, the 44 wont hold up long on 40's in the mud maybe a 37 if your lucky. also since this is a mud truck you would probly wanna run leafs in the front so its a cheaper lift, this is also a problem with the 44 cuz the 78 had cast wedges
nascarfreak88 02-15-2006, 06:29 PM its a DD... with mud about everyweekend. with it being a DD, it HAS to get me home.
i kno a few ppl runnin the D44 up front and the 10.25 in the rear, and the set up has worked ok for them, but most dont do the muddin that i do.
the diff in the the 60- its leaf sprung... and i have to deal with the stupid crumple zone up front on these trucks. the D44 is basically bolt up compared to the D60
im even thinking about sayin fuck it and buy a F350 in the same body style, already with D60 and 10.25 and bigger engine

xjtony 02-15-2006, 06:45 PM I have a sterling rear under my jeep cherokee. its overkill, but i got it for cheap with factory limited slip and 4.10 gears.
nascarfreak88 02-15-2006, 06:53 PM any regrets with it???
Stoked 02-15-2006, 07:01 PM go with the sterling. i wouldnt put a 30spline 60 in a fullsize. and i cant understand why your worried about weight, its a freakin fullsize, we weigh a ton anyways. an extra 50-70lbs with less chance of breaking it seems like a no brainer.
just my 2cents.
UglyZJ 02-15-2006, 08:09 PM I agree, I wish I would have gotten a sterling or 14 bolt and not spent the money converting my 60 to 35 spline.
xjtony 02-15-2006, 09:11 PM nascarfreak88 :
any regrets with it???
Nope, hadnt broke it. On the 35's i didnt have very much ground clearance, I just drag it through the mud.
