Friend of mine has an EB with a dana 18? t-case. He wants to upgrade his t-case to something that he can shift into 4wd on the fly. Right now he has to stop and put it in 4wd. He has the 3-speed tranny, if that helps.

Any ideas?

Its a Dana 20 that he has now. I run a NP-205 in my '69 and you can shift that one in and out of 4wd-hi 'on the fly'...but it is more than just a notion to putting one an an EB. Mine is behind a T-18 granny 4-speed, which is behind an Oz-408..and it is sitting on a custom rear cross-member....connected to custom-length drive-shafts.

If he has a few grand to spend..there are some aftermarket T-cases that probably allow shfting on the fly...but I'm not familiar with any of them enough to know for sure.

Tell him to first put in a more appropriate transmission for what he's doing. The stock EB 3 speed tranny leaves a lot to be desired in the gearing, and the beef. NP435, ZF5, NV4500 are all pretty popular for this.

For a shift on the fly, look at the Atlas II case or the new STAK case (available in EB specific form pretty soon)

I have a J-shift case in my rig, and I can shift into and out of 4 low while moving. This didn't occur until I put in the twin sticks though (how did I ever live without them?)

Yeah, it is the 20. He wants to actually run a 205. he has a fresh 302 for it, and is going to upgrade the tranny when the swap is ready. I will pass on this info, thanks guys!

If I was running a 302 and not the torque-monster I've got stuffed in mine, I would never let the D20 get away. D20s are compact and rugged buggers and much better gear ratio in low range than the NP205....and you can go even lower with aftermarket gears. If its a 'highway cruiser' then the 205 would be OK..
