: SOS NEEDS YOUR OPINIONS GIRLS AND BOYS!!!
kerry1.6-toyota 11-03-2001, 06:45 PM Kerry here, and I have a question. I'm in the process of building a Samurai with a 4 link coil suspention front and rear. Axles are 84 Toyota with 5.29 gears, lock right in the rear, and a spool in the front. Disk brakes all arround. 22RE Toyota engine, Turbo tranny and dual t-cases and one of those "sillyass" SOS TwinSTIX setups (works excellent, but doesn"t seal). O.K. here is the question: I have a set of 35in buckshot mudders on 15x8 rims, a set of 37x13 boggers on 15x7 rims and another set of 39.5x18 boggers on 15x12 MRT beadlock rims. Which do you feel will offer the optimum in off-road performance and yet inflict the least amount of dammage to the Toyota drivetrain (with in reason). Consider this, I have 26 inches of clearnace under the frame rails at the lowest point with 35's and no fender clearance problems with any of the size tires listed. I have it on 39.5's at this time but its looking really sCaRy. Kerry

J-Dogg 11-03-2001, 06:49 PM Go with the Boggers, and the lockrite in the front and the spool in the back would be a more user friendly setup, IMHO.
kerry1.6-toyota 11-03-2001, 06:57 PM Which boggers 37's or 39.5's???
poppycock 11-03-2001, 07:00 PM i'd run the 37" boogers. 39.5x18's are frickin huge! i bet because it's so light the axles will work with them but you'll be fixing birfields. alot... i bet... i'd put the spool in the rear too.
J-Dogg 11-03-2001, 07:08 PM Yep, 37's
bobaki 11-03-2001, 07:41 PM should have enough power to pull the big ones?....
scwafish 11-03-2001, 07:44 PM I'm with Jeremy on the lockers. As to the tire it depends on what kind of terrain your gonna use em on. If there is any mud or slop involved run the 37s, on rock I'd run the 35s.
After 2 years of spotting in the Warn events for a guy running 39.5 boggers I am not impressed with them for crawling. The carcass is really stiff unless you groove the wizz out of it, and there is no lateral traction at ALL. I think the 39s would be silly for wheeling, but a real hit on the sparkle truck circut
Now ue your new camera and post some pics of this mini monster!
nutzach 11-03-2001, 07:52 PM 37's are prime!

txranger 11-04-2001, 12:06 AM definitely rear with the spool. Steering is shitty enough but with 37-39" tires and a spool youll be getting a SERIOUS workout if that spoolis up front. And Id make sureyoure doing toy PS too. But I dont know anything...Im still a newbie

kerry1.6-toyota 11-04-2001, 07:15 AM The front is already spooled, that's not an isuue, all my vehicles are spooled in the front, it's just my preference. Also yes I alredy have Toy power steering in the frame. By the way fatkid do you drive a white sammy with an Inchworm? If so I must say it"s amazing. What shock set up are you runnin"? Kerry
bobaki 11-04-2001, 07:33 AM Kerry just learning here but what does a spooled front do for you ?

gunracer1 11-05-2001, 04:49 PM you are going to pop birfiels with that spool in the front, no if and or buts about it. unless you never drive it on a hard packed surface. i am the cheapest sob you will find here, unless you run in 2wd 99% of the time with 1 hub unlocked they are going to pop. i welded mine and regret it bad. no turning pita. just swap your thirds front to rear and go with it. a spool in the front is fine with a dana 60 and a hydro set up on a light weight buggy. anything more than that you are asking for trouble. mike
BenHanksRacing1 11-05-2001, 06:40 PM Throw that spooled 3rd member in the rear, then start shopping around for a high pinion FJ80 (or Lexus LX470) 3rd member w/ elec. locker for the front. Your Birfs will thank you time and time again. :D Just my .02
