: Hey Cornfedred
Scout Dude 04-02-2002, 10:00 AM Since it seems that we have similar rigs, I was wondering what motor you have in yours? Was your a v-8 version or 4 cyl? If it was a 4 cyl, WTF did you do about the stupid crossmember right in the middle of the engine compartment? And how did you support the front clip?
I know that Ben moved his forward and put two body mounts on the outside of the frame rails but I was trying to keep the body mounts on the inside. Also, my new steering box is sorta hampering my idea of a square tube crossmember on the front edge.
Anyone else who knows what I am talking about, feel free to chime in with ideas

Fire up the tube bender, make a nicely bent tube support. Geez do I have to come up with everything around here:rolleyes:

Are you turing into a :crybaby:, give us web wheelers something to chew on.

I looked into doing this but I don't think it would stop the frame from twisting.

I still haven't loaded up my digi sw to my new POS laptop....So, until then, you'll get none and like it.:smokin:
ol John Henry 04-02-2002, 12:39 PM Well.. The shock towers/radiator cage has some “tabs” welded to it that have become the front mounts. I don’t have the steel inner fenders (drilled out the spot welds and gave it to a guy that was doing a restoration). I used an old doormat & zip tied it to the inside off all the tube work and folded it over the top and zip tied again where the outer fenders used to bolt to the inner fenders.
(Does that sound confusing)
As for the front x-member just weld some 4x4 box in front off it, gusset, then cut the old one out…. But what about the core support?? Same thing.. drill out the spot-welds and push forward to your new x-member……
Oh:rolleyes: ……. I just read the part about the steering box; I guess you used a waggy… shame on you??) :D
Bender time! Hey, what do you know…. jdjandj was right:D
I can email some pics but I don’t think you’ll see anything you haven’t seen before:(
Scout Dude 04-02-2002, 01:29 PM Yes I am using a waggy box...It was free!
Actually, my buddy had a 64 with a Scout II box and it looked hacked..he switched to a waggy box also but his radiator support is moved forward like you mentioned. I want to keep mine where it is so the I can put my winch behind the grill/header thingy. Make sense?
If you don't mind, could you send some pics to my work e-mail address? (easier to download..etc)
joel_kelsey@hp.com
thx,
Joel
A 4 liter V8 eater 04-02-2002, 04:30 PM I definatly think the waggy box was a step in the right direction.

Thank's for the insight 4by
Welcome DAN :flipoff2:
Scout Dude 04-03-2002, 07:57 AM Ok...Last night I bent up a section of tube and will mount the radiator to it instead of the core support...I think that I'm gonna just hack out the entire middle of the core support and then try to make new mounts on the sides (Inside)....I need to get the stupid crossmember outta there so I can get my Steering box hooked up.....
Bindernut 04-06-2002, 10:36 PM are you puttin a chevy v-8 in it? Cuz if you're going for a IH v-8 and think you're still gonna fit a winch behind the grill, you're :smokin: , there's no room for both unfortunately. :( It will be REAL tight even with a small chev/mopar/ford v-8 and a winch, if it would even fit. You could hack up the firewall and shove everything back, but that's not too much fun. OK, it's fun but not very eloquent :D
I should get my scanner back later in the week, so I can scan in a bunch of pictures of my brother's 800 from when we did all that bull to it. We used a SII saginaw box though, which gets things out of the way inside there. What's wrong with having body mounts outside the frame in the front? In the way of something?
Any other specific questions? I do have a suggestion for your front crossmember: Get a 4x6x.25 box tube steel. Use the 4" dimension as the height (same as frame), and orient the 6" dimension front to rear. Notch the box section such that the first two inches (of the six) fit in between the frame rails at the front, but the other 4" continue out to the outer width of the frame rails, so that you effectively "lengthen" the frame by 4". Weld all intersection lines between x-member and frame. This gives lots of room behind the x-member to build whatever you need, and gives a good front beefy member to add reverse shackle towers and what not. I'll get pictures soon as I can, but like cornfedred said, it's probably nothing you haven't seen before...
Scout Dude 04-06-2002, 10:45 PM Umm..I've had the Chevy v-8 in for about 5 years now...and there is plenty of room for winch too...
I wouldn't call what I did as "hacking up the firewall". I simply cut it out and made a new one that was a little wider so that the SB would fit. This was my first introduction to sheet metal work and it was really easy.
I have since created new body mounts and tomorrow, I'll tackle the crossmember.;)

Bindernut 04-06-2002, 11:44 PM good to know the winch fits with a smaller engine in there, that's cool.
As for the hacking comments, I didn't mean to imply that you'd do some redneck cut-the-hell-out-of-it jobber, it was just a quick way to say that you would have to rework the sheetmetal to make room for the drivers side valve cover and exhaust manifold. See how much effort it was for me to say all that crap? :D
Here's where I'm confused (guess I'm just a dumbass): you said "Anyone else who knows what I am talking about, feel free to chime in with ideas"
OK, I've messed with this stuff a lot, so I know what you're talking about. What I missed is what you need ideas for if you've already set your shit up with v-8 and winch. What are you asking about? I already knew your white 800 had a chevy in it, but I didn't know what you did to get it in there. I ass-u-med we must be talking about some other Scout that was unmodified, since you were asking about this stuff again. my bad.
Having trouble with the mounting of the steering box, is that it? Sorry I'm so dense, I must be missing something here. I'd like to be more helpful, if I can just figure out what the hell you're asking....
as for the new body mounts, which side of the frame did you end up putting them on, inside or outside?

Well, I picked up the winch a while ago but never got around to putting it in. I'd planned to put it in front of the radiator like I mentioned earlier but I used to have a Ford 2wd PS box and I knew that I was switching to a 4-bolt saginaw one so I figured that I'd wait.
Here's what it used to look like:
http://community.webshots.com/rz/r1/3/61/10/29836110VMZAgcegfz_ph
That, I would consider "hacked"... I had the raditator made to original dimensions but filpped the straps around...and forgot about the stupid crossmember being there when I told the guy to do it. So, I had to notch out the crosmember to make it fit....I'm pretty sure that it was about the first time I used a gas axe and it came out a little screwed. Well, now with the new PS box, it's gotta go.
So far, I cut out the flat sheet metal from between the core support and the welded new mounts on the inside. These are supported from the frame by the new radiator hoop and mounts off of this. I'll post more pics tonight.
Make sense so far?
:rasta:
Bindernut 04-07-2002, 09:11 PM thanks, now i gotcha. looking forward to the rest of the pics...
